1. If you must drive, buy vehicles that have a lower gas mileage. Alternative vehicles can be considered, but they all use fuel of some kind...even the electric ones use electricity made from coal burning.

2. If you don't have to drive, take public transportation or ride a bike.

3. Recycle, recycle, recycle. Especially things that have mercury and freon. We don't want that leaching into water supplies.

4. Don't run your a/c all the time. You can even get one of those switches that shuts it off ever 15 minutes or so.

5. Plant trees and other plants. If you don't have a place to plant it, donate one to a city or park. You can also plant plants in pots if you don't have a garden area. It isn't just trees that breathe carbon dioxide.

6. Plant a vegitable garden or vegitables in pots. It is exercise, it is the cheapest natural foods, and no pollutions due to transportation.

7. If you can afford the initial costs, get those house shingles that collect solar heat and make a deal with the power companies to sell them the excess energy.

8. Replace the light bulbs with incandescent bulbs, but be sure to recycle the new bulbs.

9. Turn off the computer and tv. We all spend too much time on these and not enough time exercising outdoors.

10. Join local groups in the park and highway cleanup campaigns.

11. Don't just walk by a piece of trash that you see on the ground. It won't kill you to pick it up and carry it to the nearest trash can.

12. Be carefull what you dump into the gutter.

13. Buy recycled materials like paper.

14. When you read a book instead of watching tv, pass it on to someone else or donate it to your nearest school or library. Magazines too (schools usually are looking for these).

15. Vote for programs to help save energy and the environement. Like LED lights to be used on the streets and other city lighting.

16. Buy only the size home you need. Bigger homes use more energy and cost more.

17. Go back to hanging clothes out to dry.

18. Wear more wool and fleece in the winter and lower your thermostat.

19. There is nothing wrong with used clothing that is in good shape. Buy vintage.

20. Pay and receive your bills online. Go paperless.

21. Change your shower head to a more efficient one.

22. Turn down your water heater. Keeping it too high can cause scalding anyway.

23. Get an energy audit from you local power company (usually free), and head their advice.

24. Buy energy efficient appliances.

25. Insulate older water heaters that aren't built with insulation, to help retain heat.

26. Buy from farmers' markets.

27. Shut off the lights when you don't need them. Even if you are in the room.

28. Rake your leaves instead of using a blower/vac (I have a hard time with this having 32 trees that all lose their leaves about the same time just before it snows.)

29. Use old rags or clothing and such for packing instead of plastic or styrofoam.

30. Carpool.

31. Keep your tires inflated. Low tired cause us to use up gas mileage.

32. Don't use a/c in your car if you can roll down the window.

33. If you can avoid making a left turn in a car, it might be worth doing it instead of idling for your turn to go.

34. Watch your consumption. This goes for all things. Food, material goods, energy and more.

35. Eat more things like salads and sandwiches instead of using electricity or gas to cook all of your meals. We can't avoid it all the time, but a little bit from many adds up.

This is all that I can think of. Since, I am running my computer and not taking my own advice, I think I'll go now.

Emma, we need to stop passing gas, and get all of our animals to stop passing gas as well. There is also all of the swamps, and bogs where the natural process that goes on there is also producing green house gases, we need to put a halt to those as well. Good research into the problem should show that we the people are a very small part of the problem. Perhaps we are to small a part of it to really make much of a difference. I think that the "Chicken Little Syndrome" is in full blossom here and smart people need to put an end to this non-sense. Your generation is more at fault for pollution, and throwing away stuff, so, your generation should be doing more. Mine, we started the waste awareness issue. We gave your generation the awareness of the on going problem, but your generation has been in different, and throws away far to much.

Bit of an alarmist there Emma? If the next generation is going down the tubes because of global warming, the last thing on my mind is Antarctic penguins. You should start yourself, by using large cap only when necessary. Otherwise, no one will listen because they'll regard you as a raving lunatic. People listen to the cool and collected, and often believe what is said. Good-luck on your quest. Btw, I'm shutting down ('puter) & going roller-blading. That's eco friendly, right?

I think the global warming thing is just gay propaganda. The earth is ours. I know we shouldn't liter but lightering and cutting down trees and other things isn't going to destroy the world. I believe the environmentalists are diseeving us because if were trying to save the earth we might not cut as many trees down or something like that. So what should we save ourselves or the world?

Positions on your city council. Being involved on a community level. Also organizing clean up trips. And just recycling anything reusable. Which means getting the recycling BOX and using it.
PHEW. Hope all that helps you.

Thankyou for putting that information out! People I have told about it think I am making up storys and that nothing will happen to them if they keep polluting! People need to stop polluting or Global Warming might even kill us all!

Well, I do my part. I take public transportation and bike when possible, clean up litter, and recycle. I look at it this way though. If people are stupid and don't know how to take care of earth, the earth deserves to kill us off. To it, we are just a parasite.

I just read about this website on Wall Street Journal: Carbon Diet Plan, which lists ways to improve one's ecological profile "and provides inspiration for your friends to do the same."
