If a leisure facility opened that has 8 large studios, no main gym (some weights will be available in the studios) and has 250 classes a week covering everything from martial arts, boxing, and sports specific exercise, to your 'normal' classes i.e. body pump, pilates, yoga etc, to dance classes i.e. ballroom, salsa etc. Even classes for the 6 - 16 year old age group....... Would you use it......the rationale behind the idea is every health club in the country is the same, weights machine, c.v. machine and instructors who don't want to be there.....if it was a studio based facility, it would be constantly motivational, always good fun and would mean more people would feel relaxed about using it....At the moment, the 'stereotypical' gym user puts others off joining and people get bored easily and end up leaving.......what do you reckon?

Yes, the 250 classes would include all levels from beginners to advanced so, theorectically, no-one should be out of their comfort zone..

Thx Matt, great answer and yes, this concept is aimed at the 88% of the UK population who do not work out...only 12% are members of public or private facilities, therefore the other 88% do vertually nothing to keep fit...it is designed to be a change of the product that is not attracting many new people, hopefully this will..!!!!!!!!

Interesting idea. I wouldn't use such a facility but I can see the attraction. There would be a downside to it from a business perspective though.

If you're a gym user at the moment, then you probably already have a membership somewhere that caters for most (if not all) of what you want out of a gym. The only reason people change gyms is because its cheaper somewhere else or theres a change in their personal circumstance. If you were an avid class-taker then the idea of such a fitness studio might be appealing but I can't see it having a lot of impact on people who already enjoy their fitness classes.

The market you do have an opportunity to go for are all the people who don't go to a gym regularly at the moment. Especially now that the smoking ban has started - you get the chance to market yourself as a way to keep the weight off for all those ex-smokers who are going without their appetite suppresants.

Gyms these days are all the same because its a formula that works and appeals to the widest customer base. You will have to do a bit of hard work to market yourself as something new, different and more importantly, practical.

Myself, I mostly use weights in the gym, little bit of cardio and never do any classes. Your idea wouldn't suit me but

Best of luck with it, though.

We have something here in a town near me - called the Center Studio. It's very popular, although I haven't taken the time to drive over there. My friends tell me they have an interesting pay schedule - you can pay be the class, by the month or do a seasonal pass. So much nicer than the gyms that only have the "suck you dry all year long" mentality!

I'm always put off using the classes because the long termers know all the moves and I look an idiot, so if they had beginners, intermiediate and advanced classes it would motivate me to join in.
