I have two zebra finches. One girl one boy. I came back after a two hour trip to town to find all their wooden perches with what seems like blood stains on them. Both their vents and bottoms are clean as usual and there is no change in behaviour. The blood (if it really is blood) washes off easily off the perches. I don't know what to do. What could have caused this? Please help!

Check their nails. Has the bleeding stopped? Is the nail gone? If they (it) is still bleeding and it is from a broken nail, I would suggest putting flour on the perches and floor to help stop the bleeding. Did you know that the only animal that can die of a broken nail is a bird? This is because they are so small and can go into shock quickly, and a drop of blood in relation to size is alot to a bird. Once the bleeding has stopped you should be ok, just keep the cage clean to avoid infection and keep a close eye on them to watch for a reopening of the wound( I would keep some flour nearby just in case). Also you could google bird first aide, there is quit alot of useful info that you should really read anyway, just for a case like this. Good Luck. Sounds like they will be fine though, cause it sounds as though the bleeding has stopped, but I bet it was a nail.

They could have been fighting..is your cage big enough for the two of them? Do you have a lot of toys in there? One of them may have gotten hurt on one of them.
As another said, it could be regurgitation (sp) or it chould be poop. Keep an eye on them. If you notice that one is fluffed up or not perching a vet visit may be in order.

Maybe they were fighting with each other while you were gone.
