Good for you on your decision to volunteer. My advice to you would be to remember the patients are people and don't want to be in the hospital. Also, smile, smile, smile. It is amazing how quickly you can turn someones day around with a simple smile and hello. Never break confidentiality. You may not go back to your friends or family and tell them who you saw, what you saw etc. And most importantly...remember to have fun! Meet interesting people and go home at the end of the day blessed that you are able to go home, and hopefully someone will be blessed to have met you also!

Contact the human resources cent re or volunteering committee at the hospital. They have a whole list of things you can do. from some clerical work to helping out with patients.

This may be weird, but remember that they are sick people. Please wash your hands after any visit and look for precautions on each door. When in doubt, stay out.I can never stress hard enough on being cautious. They can not tell you what the patient has,so act like everyone is contagious. Then once home please shower right after.Have fun and enjoy cheering people up...

# 1 rule...Wash your hands often.
# 2 rule...Ever heard the saying "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas"? Same concept...confidentiality is VERY important. Patients are in a very fragile state and they want to keep their business private.
# 3 rule..Take time to talk to elderly people, listen to their stories. It is a wonderful insight to history.
# 4 rule...be respectful, patient and kind in your words and actions.
# 5 rule...HAVE FUN!!!
You will learn so much about humanity...
