Since all mammals produce milk for their young it wasn't hard to figure out that cows produce milk. From that point it's not a big jump to harvesting it yourself if there's no calf to drink it.
It's not the food stuff that is hard to understand. But how the hell did someone come up with the idea of trying tobacco and smoking it.

i am sure the first person who ever milked a cow wasnt doing anything other than trying to see why the utters were so swollen and dripping.i do not know how we found that out. then again maybe adam and eve got the gift of knowledge from god and thus we have always known that goats and cows make milk.there wrent any bottles in adam and eves day.how did they know to breast feed their children to keep them alive.god again.

I imagine that people who first domesticated animals, lived a lot closer to them than we do, and observed them in their daily life.I can see a child living daily with lets say goats imitating the baby goats by suckling on the mama goat. perhaps it started as a way to relieve the pain for an animal who had lost its young or even simpler, humans suckled their young so they recognized the similarity.not having stores handy man was quite adept at finding and using whatever resources available to him. women died in childbirth a lot so maybe it wasn't a giant leap to put a motherless child on to an animals teat to save it from starvation.

How did we find out frog legs were edible? Who ate the first oyster? When were hog's testes deemed a delicacy? All in all, man has developed a pretty disgusting diet.

Good question. That's the same person that dug up a potato and said "Look at this thing. Fry it up!"
