our lives--yet, taking responsibility, he wrote, means not blaming anything, anyone else, INCLUDING OURSELVES for what has happened. How can you accept responsibility for not blaming yourself?...I dont get it.

Taking responsibility means that I acknowledge the fact that I did something. Blaming myself means that I say: I did it and I feel bad about it.
Feeling bad about it is not necessary. Not repeating a mistake or correcting is.

I am not responsible for every single thing that happens to fall on me. For example, if a drunken driver smashes into my car while I am observing the habits and laws of safe driving, I am not responsible or accountable the drunk is-and there are things that nobody is accountable or responsible for like many natural disasters. Being responsible for the things I do or neglect to do and their repercussions is more than enough. Thank you,Deepak

I don't believe that i am responsible for things that happened before i was born or with which i was never actually involved, but I am responsible for doing what i can to improve the situation. I also don't believe that I am reincarnated and working out things done in previous lives-that does not strike me as just.

We are responsible but that doesn't mean we should 'crucify' ourselves as that does more harm and causes more suffering. Taking responsibility in a honest and true way without having to go into self-laceration takes a lot of practice but it is practicing non-violence which is an enormous spiritual law. If you perpetuate violence to yourself through thoughts or actions that are destructive to you it only creates more suffering for you and others. Learning how to simply accept what is is a big step and not easy but it is the way to freedom. I am working on this one myself. Namaste (Buddhist) Deepak Chopra rocks! Love that guy.

Responsibility is not the same thing as blame.

Responsibility is understanding that you are the source of your life - much like the source of a river.

You are where it comes from.

"Blame" is not a neutral word - yes, it means to hold someone responsible for something...but it carries the meaning of "finding fault" also.

I believe he is saying that if what you are doing is finding fault with yourself, you are seeing the life you create as something "wrong" or "bad", and so long as you do that, you will have an automatic resistance to seeing yourself as the source of it.

It's about NOT blaming yourself or others. Accept what has happened - and move on. Also - if there is no evil - then it's all good. We may not SEE it as good - but it is. i.e. - you lose your job. It's a good thing. Don't blame yourself - don't blame your boss - just know it happened and move joyfully toward your next steps. Get it?

He's pretty much trying to say one must not hold others or oneself guilty for things that happen in our lives for that is a vicious cycle! The important thing is that you learn a lesson from the scenario!

So what does it matter what Deepak Chopra thinks? So he has written a few books and speeches. Is he becoming your guru for living?

He's not popular because he makes sense. He's popular because he tells people the kind of convoluted crap they like to hear (I think some people like to feel confused). Oh, yeah . . . And he's got a toothy smile.

(Edit)

And dimples. Mustn't forget the dimples.

Because what has happened has happened, you did your best but you did it, and yet, no one deserves blame, because everyone does what they feel is best...
