I would say that religion is a philosophy that many adhere to often, but not always, involving a deity or many deities.

Religion is a BELIEF system about God. Spirituality is a system of KNOWLEDGE of Self.
Martial Arts were devised by Spiritual persons as a means of protection; it was against the law for them to carry normal weapons (sword, bow, etc.), so they devised a system of self-defense which used farm tools, which were legal to carry.
If I had to classify Martial Arts as either a form of Religion or a form of Spirituality, I would choose Spirituality, because they had to KNOW what the Human body was capable of in order to devise a system that uses the Human body so efficiently.

Religion is a system of beliefs about deity or deities.
Something can be called a religion if its adherants have the devotion or zeal of a religious person.
Some martial arts contain aspects of eastern religions. It may be as simple as bowing to honor dead ancestors.

A religion is a set of beliefs and practices generally held by a community, involving adherence to codified beliefs and rituals and study of ancestral or cultural traditions, writings, history, and mythology, as well as personal faith and mystic experience. The term "religion" refers to both the personal practices related to communal faith and to group rituals and communication stemming from shared conviction.

Religion is mans effort to earn their way to Heaven.
Christianity is not a Religion.
Christianity is based on believing that Christ died for your sins and my sinsm 2000 years ago, because you and me are sinners.
BTW, no matter how good one tries to be when participating in any religion, it will never be good enough to get to heaven

I will give the same description that I have just presented in another post.
James, the half brother of Jesus described religion as such:
'Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world".
Religion to me, is about relationship with God through his son Jesus Christ by faith and in obedience to him.
To me,neither description is very intimidating or complicated.
