Maybe your friend has one parent that is muslim and the other that is christian. Which would indeed make them half of half and divided due to the fact on Friday they are at masque and Sunday they are at church. Often times in inner faith marriages the child goes to religious service of both parents until they are old enough to decide on which religion if either they want to choose.
Now, the next part of your question your friend can be friends with anyone they choose too regardless of their religion. Even in Israel there are mixed Jew and Muslim, Christian and Jew, Christian and Muslim marriages.

Religion is not race.
Many religions share very common core principles, so believing in principles that apply across several religions could quite easily mean that you believe (for the most) part in two religions.
If you believe in god
... Believe in family
... Believe that society and community is important
... Believe that harming people is bad and not to be done
... Believe in fidelity of marriage
... Believe in a form of afterlife, or a better place
The which religion do you believe in?
A person saying that they believe in two religions is more likely a result of them wanting to be inclusive and respectful in their behaviour towards friends, family and others that they respect rather than a mistaken appreciation of core principles of divinity.

I would think that this was referring to his heritage rather than his beliefs. Perhaps it is the personal convictions of this person's parents or the general beliefs of mother and father's families.

If Christian is a person who follows the teachings of Christ (pbuh) and not one who worships Christ (pbuh). (We are more Christian than the Christians themselves).
(b)

Jesus (pbuh) said, "not my will but thy will be done." i.e. Muslim.
