the bible say that the term "day" has different meaning . The facts disagree with such a conclusion: (1) Light from the Andromeda nebula can be seen on a clear night in the northern hemisphere. It takes about 2,000,000 years for that light to reach the earth, indicating that the universe must be at least millions of years old. (2) End products of radioactive decay in rocks in the earth testify that some rock formations have been undisturbed for billions of years.
Genesis 1:3-31 is not discussing the original creation of matter or of the heavenly bodies. It describes the preparation of the already existing earth for human habitation. This included creation of the basic kinds of vegetation, marine life, flying creatures, land animals, and the first human pair. All of this is said to have been done within a period of six “days.” However, the Hebrew word translated “day” has a variety of meanings, including ‘a long time; the time covering an extraordinary event.’ (Old Testament Word Studies, Grand Rapids, Mich.; 1978, W. Wilson, p. 109) The term used allows for the thought that each “day” could have been thousands of years in length.
6000 years is the creation of Adam, but not the earth.

Christians who do not promte the Gap theory believe the earth is between 6,000 and 10,000 years old. Christians who believe in the Gap theory, believe that the earth is probably as old as many scientists claim. According to wikipedia, “Gap creationism, also called Restitution creationism or Ruin-Reconstruction, are terms used to describe a particular set of Christian beliefs about the creation of the Universe and the origin of man. The concept of the Gap Theory is widely thought to have been promulgated by William Buckland and Thomas Chalmers in the early 1800s, though some adherents maintain that it can be traced back to biblical times. Certainly it became quite popular when it was promoted by the Scofield Reference Bible in 1909.”
"Gap creationists believe that science has proven beyond reasonable doubt that the Earth is in fact far older than can be accounted for by merely adding up the ages of Biblical patriarchs, as given in the Book of Genesis. By using this approach, Young Earth creationists derive the age of the Earth to be approximately 6,000 – 10,000 years. In order to maintain that the Genesis account is inerrant in matters of scientific fact, whilst simultaneously accepting that the Earth is extremely ancient, Gap Creationists suppose that certain facts about both the human past and the age of the Earth have been omitted from the Biblical account rather than mythologized by it."
"One approach to this problem is to state that before the six days of Creation and the Fall of Man, there must have been a "gap" in the Biblical account that lasted perhaps tens of thousands or even millions or billions of years."

Depends. Some take the Bible completely literally and said it is only a few thousand years old.
My husband a Christian and a physicist says it's 4.65 billion years old give or take a few hundred million years.
I'm a Christian and personally I don't think you can know and it is very much a secondary issue and therefore doesn't really matter compared to the understanding that, however He did it, God created the earth.

As a Christian, I can only theorise on how old it is and may I say that Christianity does not conflict with science as much as science tries to disprove God.
The one thing I am certain of is that this earth will hopefully be some 80 to 100 yrs older when I die than it was when I was born.
Best wishes, Mike.

Creation of the world started around 4.6 billion years ago but the foundations of the modern world was formed around 600 million years ago.Just because I am a Christian doesn't mean I think the world was made in terms of our days. People at the time of the Bible had no concept of millions of years so would not have understood. It does not change the fact that it was some feat of genius(not an accident as atheists believe).

Well, the thing is, Christians don't all agree on it. Some believe in a young Earth, others don't.
I'm a Christian, and I believe it's entirely possible that the Earth is billions of years old.

I believe the World is as old as the scientist predict, Christianity, in my view goes hand in hand with the developing scientific world. I do understand that the Bible was written in those days of lack of knowledge of the worlds life history, But in the New testament thousands of yrs later, It was scrupulous written down, by doctors, civil servants, and to be true.

I am a Christian Preacher, Evangelist and Writer.
It is my belief that this earth is several billion years old.
It is also my belief that I was created in the image of God as recorded in the book of Genesis.
The Bible is the record of God's attempts to offer reconciliation between Man and God. It is a History of the Jewish People.
It IS NOT, necessarily, the History of the World.
