Yes of course they can hear. Why do you think the hens cluck and the chicks come running? Why does the whole flock come running when you go out with grain and call here...chick, chick, chick...?
The ears of most birds are flat for the sake of aerodynamics and may be covered with feathers, but they are there. Think about all the different bird calls. While we enjoy them, they are not for our benefit. They are used to mark territory, seek a mate, warn of danger.
Whether or not chickens LISTEN is another story...sort of like teenagers...
