Since the Mexican border with the US is such a MAJOR problem in terms of drug smuggling and illegal entry, should the US military be pulled out of Iraq and stationed along the US-Mexican border with orders to shoot anyone who tries to cross? Should a 10-mile-wide military free-fire zone be established using 500,000 US troops to deter illegal border crossings of all types?

We can't. The posse comitatus act prevents the military from being used in a law enforcement category. Since border crossings from Mexico are deemed a crime and not a threat to national security, the military cannot be used.

But there is good news...all you have to do is convince Congress and the White House that it's a threat to national security and get the border crossings moved from "crime" to "threat", and you can flood the border with all the troops you want.

This is a bit of a problem. I have no issue at all with shooting drug smugglers. In fact, I think it would be best if we could hit them on the Mexican side so disposal of the body would be their problem. However, taking someones life seems a bit much for just an unauthorized border crossing. I would totally like to see US troops or a lot more border patrol securing the border to make sure no one gets through without our knowledge. I don't think we can gracefully withdraw from Iraq at this point so that option is just not available. It probably would be a better use of our troops though.

This whole ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION crap shouldn't even be a problem. Politicians are thinking too "liberally" and are not thinking with reason. How to stop illegal immigration: stop people from crossing the border. How to stop people from crossing the border: fortify and protect the border. I don't there needs to be that big of a military presence on the border but there needs to be something. Laws in the inside could help as well. We could heavily and unnecessarily punish those who employ illegal workers. We could pay more attention to visa overstays and illegal activity. BUT... We choose not to as politicians we chose try to think "out-of-the-box" and think up of crap like "amnesty".

The U.S. government has no intention of controlling the border from illegal immigrants. Further any Border Patrol agent that hurts one of these illegals will be put in jail and the illegal will be given amnesty.

Let's be real and face how drastically we are being deceived. The politicians have lost all respect for the people who obey the law and pay their salaries and lifetime retirements. They are hell bent on having things their own way.

Shoot to kill orders and a 10 mile wide zone seem a bit excessive however using military to patrol, arrest and detail illegals until they can be turned over to the border patrol officials for deportation or jail Sure Sounds Like A Good Idea To Me!!!

1) yes militarize the borders.
2) send our reserve troops to the U.S. borders not Iraq
3) send a surge of 100k border patrol agents
3) built 100 detention centers for illegal immigrants
4) severly punish companies that employ illegal immigrants
5) vote off any politician that drags their asses to long this!
6) provide more help to legal immigrants.
7) build a high tech security wall to deter ilegal immigrants

We waited years and complained and threatened until we had a wall around the world torn down and now our government would build a wall here. The idea is ridiculous. The cost alone is outrageous. We need our borders patrolled but there should not be orders to shoot to kill anyone that comes too close. I would much rather see US troops here along the border to enforce the limits of entry.

Absolutely. I've been saying this a long time. We don't even have to pull the troops from Iraq (that's another story!) but we could allow the Minutemen to line up and do the duty the WANT to do.

They should send the Marines to guard the border...I think some people don't want it they think the Marines are going to shoot everyone in sight. That's not true, they are not stupid. But they are serious about their job and would do an excellent job in enforcing the law.

There's No Way that's going to happen!
The best solution is the 2 tiered wall. Yet another example of passed legislation that is not being implemented/enforced.
