Well, I live in the country, so the only car to worry about is my own and visitors.
However, my kittens seem to enjoy sitting below the car or on the wheels, and for me, getting out of the drive is a two-man operation, because when I start the engine they just do't move, and when Im about to move off, they even run back in again! How can I make them aware of this danger?

Put marbles (or something similar) in a can and whenever you see them under or around the cars - shake the can - the loud noise will scare the heck out of them and eventually they will associate this loud, scary noise with being around cars. Do this even when you aren't getting ready to leave - just whenever you see them by the car.

The ONLY sure way is to keep them IN THE HOUSE at all times. Cats cannot be taught to be afraid of cars because they sense no danger in them--as your mum displays. Cats LIKE cars, they are a source of warmth to them in the winter for outside cats. And, it's not just the wheels they will get upon. They can also get into the engine compartment, and this is VERY dangerous! I can tell that you are in the U.K., but here in "the states", every winter we have warnings all over every TV news broadcast to PLEASE--knock on the hood of your car before you get in and start it up---there could be a cat sleeping on your engine and when the car starts, all the belts & fans start up, the cat has no way to get out and will be killed. So, please, if you love your kitties, and I'm sure you do, take them into the house (or barn if you have one) and keep them indoors. Other than this, there is no-way to train a cat to stay away from a car---they just aren't "programmed" to understand that.

The kittens are drawn to the warmth or the shade when the car is parked. When you see them around the car, chase them away every time. That may help. But I will still check to make sure they are all accounted for before you even start the car. They have been known to crawl up in the engine.

Hon, if your kittens are young enough to not be afraid of cars, they're too young to be outside by themselves.
I too live in the country, on acreage, so my cats are allowed outdoors...but in the case of a new kitten, ONLY when I'm outside to supervise them. As they get older, I walk them on a leash and harness around the perimeters of my property, so they know their boundaries.
Kittens are more curious than fearful. It's up to YOU to keep them out of danger. I suspect that a couple of trips inside the car to the vet will change their mind about cars! If not, they'll need to be indoor-only cats.

Why are kittens outside anyway? Cars are a problem but animal attacks, parasites and diseases should be a concern as well. Cats are killed outdoors all the time. Keep them in!

You can't! Cats should not be allowed to go outside where there are so many more dangers than just your car.
