First off it is important to know when interpreting a dream that EVERYTHING in the dream is a different asct of YOU. So this dream is not about your X. What ever it is you think about your x whaen you think about him...that quality whether good or bad is a quality that you have within your self. The car is you in your daily physical life. It sounds like you are not in control of your life and are going to go the wrong way (or backwards) if you do not take control. And it is probobly because of the aspect of yourself that relates to your X.

Motion backwards generally indicates a need to go back to the past. I've had dreams when I've been going backwards too, usually if I'm upset about something that's happened a few weeks ago that feels unresolved.

The car may represent yourself and your force. You may be going backwards as you may feel you want to get back with him.

An amazing book you can probably order on the Internet is "Understanding Dreams" by Nerys Dee. It's helped me interpret my dreams.

To dream that you are walking or moving backward, signifies that what you are doing may be counter-productive. What you are seeking in life appears to be moving away from you. Thus you may be feeling a sense of failure or believe that you are unable to achieve your goals and aspirations. On the other hand, moving backward in your dream may symbolize that you should back off or retreat in a situation you may be facing in your waking life

It means instead of going forward in his life, he actually heading backwards. Things in his life are not going in the right direction. Very straight forward.

Absolutely nothing. You were probably just thinking of him/something related to him and driving before you fell asleep

if you were not in the car with him, and he was driving away from you, then it is like he is getting further away from you. the relationship is over, he is being removed from the forefront of your life.
