No, it is not wrong, because immigrants who do not make the effort to learn the language will be forever limited in their ability to be successful in this country. Failure to assimilate means failure to advance. Besides the personal tragedy for the individual, not speaking the language inevitably means an increasing dependency on government support because they will not be able to adequately support themselves.

Every immigrant needs to be able to adequately communicate in their new nation. No it is not wrong and many nations require an immigrant be able to read and speak their language. If an immigrant wants to not learn another language, they should choose a nation which shares their native language. This isn't an English only issue. Any nation has the right to expect people who choose to live there, speak their language, whether that nation be the US, France, Portugal, Syria or even Mexico.

Yes, it is wrong. Why would you expect an English speaking country be burdened with trying to decipher what you are saying. Immigrating here and not learning the language indicates you really do not want to assimilate, simply take advantage of the benefits.
The government should not be burdened with hiring both English and Spanish speaking people for the same job, publishing everything in both English and Spanish.
For generations people from all countries have immigrated here and learned the language. Why should Mexicans be treated differently?

Nope - check out the criteria for other countries............why SHOULDN'T we do that?
Why should a person that is immigrating here get special privileges over the people that were BORN here?
Think about communication in the office - you have a meeting and since 1/4 didn't have to learn English how would that group of people communicate? Not going to happen.
So they don't learn English and aren't able to get good paying jobs and then complain that we aren't doing enough for them....Hello!!! They made the choice to move to an English speaking country - their choice - with that choice they also have the responsibility to effectively communicate in the country of their CHOICE.
Look at the website for immigration to The Netherlands - as liberal as they have a reputation for being they still make it mandatory to learn Dutch - at YOUR expense mind you - not the government's -

No....They came here. Part of the deal.....can't do it......don't come. Is it right to make citizens of a country and all legal immigrants who learned English be expected to change their nations language for 1 group? What happens when there's another influx of immigrants from another country who doesn't want to learn that language? How many languages is a citizen of a country expected to learn to live in their own country?

This is a ver interesting question. I do not believe it's wrong for immigrants to have to learn to speak english even if they have spent their lifes speaking another language. When I moved to Puerto Rico at the age of 19 I had to learn spanish. Why should I expect everyone their to speak english just for me? No culture or country is going to change their language just to accomidate you. I am now 23 and live in the Philippines. I have to learn to speak Tagalog. This is their country their language and if i wish to funtion in their society i must speak their language. As for immigrant if they wish to function our american society they must speak our language as they would expect us to speak their language in their country.

No, it is most definitely not wrong to make them speak English. It's called assimilation into the culture they are joining. there is nothing stopping them from conversing among themselves in their native language, but learning to communicate in the local language is a must.

English is the voice and communication of this country--USA. If you leave your homeland and come to the USA--might help to speak english to get along with your neighbor. English is taught around the world. It should be a requirement for entring this country. New York City has over 100 written driving exams for people who do not read english. Why should we have to cater to people who want to migrate to the USA and refuse to conform. . Turn of the centry immigrants learned english and it was accepted that you learn the words of the land to succeed. The native American indians learned english. The language of all passenger pilots is english..world wide.

No. Plain and simple this is an English speaking country which should be respected. A person always needs to learn new skills and things to better themselves. If I lived in Mexico or Spain do you think they would think it is wrong for me to learn Spanish even though I spent my entire life speaking English? I think not!

This is the United States of America, we speak english here. If you can't learn to speak english go back where you came from. If I go to another country, I would at least make an attempt to have a rudimentary understanding of that language. I would not expect them to learn english. My realatives learned english when they came here.
And we have the right to say who comes into our country, you have a lock on the doors of your house, so we should have locks on the doors of our country.
