This old bug (in need of mechanical and body work) had been sitting out in a backyard for 6 years, by the time I got it. When I tried to start it I found that the battery was dead and wouldn't take a charge. I bought a new six volt battery and the motor turns over, but even with new gas, won't start.
From my coil wire, I got a very faint spark, but now get next to nothing. Bad coil? Bad voltage regulator? Anything else to look for, that may produce a low spark?
Would like to get it running so I can move it around my yard to the barn where I can work on it.

If it's really a '67, it should be 12 volts. That's probably half your problem. Like the man said, look for the decals & try a 12 volt, see if it helps. Got a good spark now? No? Points, condenser, cap, rotor, plugs & wireset. Get the number off the distributor so you get the right stuff in case it was ever changed. (Show me a 40-year old Bug with the original motor, let alone distributor... ;^) )

Next, even though you've got it turning over doesn't mean you have compression. Rings could be stuck. Do a test, & if you're under about 80 psi, shoot some Free-All or B'Laster in the cylinders to loosen the rings. After they're free, clean the strainer & change the oil.

Carb next. After all this time, it's likely a mess. Kits are cheap, (Again, get the number off the carb. 28, 30 or 32PICT something... Same reasons as above) & you should be able to rebuild the thing without much trouble. Clean & flush your tank & fuel lines, make sure the pump's good.

Check your valve adjustment: .006" on all valves when cold. Make sure none of your pushrods are blown off the rockers (VW's are notorious for this if the valves get too loose). New valve cover gaskets, clean, fresh gas & filter, & try it again.

BTW....the '67 is a great choice. One of the few years you can tell at a glance, as there are a lot of 'unique to 1967' features. ie: only year for those particular doors & handles.....the list goes on. Also VW's best-selling year in the US.

ARE you sure this is a 67? 1500 single port engine and was first year for 12 volt ? Silver and red 12V sticker on the drivers door jamb. Ingnition points good place to start. The 66 1300 engine had the voltage regulator on top of the generator 1967 had the 12 volt generator and voltage regulator under the back seat. 1968 had the gas filler out side and was 12v.

Try on the carburator, disconnect the fuel pump hose near the carburator. Look if there's gas pouring out. If there is , reconnect.Adjust the idle if the carb higher. Check the "Platino of the coil. You need a mechanic to do this maybe needs adjustment or replacement. Because somebody has to adjust the flywheel giving enough clearance to the coil tap. You need to open the coil sir. Next is the battery wires check it too. The electrical wiring wiring too. Now oil. That's about the trouble shooting I know.

I assume it is a six volt bug, not 12.
Prolly get a new coil. You should get a big fat blue spark from the plug wire.
Check the engine ground strap.
Make sure the battery's well grounded.

Should be 12 v. Put new plugs, points, condenser in it. Pour a spoon full of gas down throat of carb. Old fuel pumps are hard to get self primed.
Check for flow of gas at inlet of fuel pump, if none, check where fuel line comes out of tank. Tank may be full of trash near bottom at drain.
Good Luck.

DUDE if a car is sat for SIX years then it will nead alot of work. The brakes and brake and fuel lines are rusted. You should clean your points and also buy a carb kit becasue the rubbers are dried out in it.
