They are models, hired for commercials. Companies like BoFlex call up an agency--like Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency or John Robert Powers--who sends them a couple models for the show. For infomercials, these are people just trying to break into the business, not couture models. Many are actors hoping for their big break. Josh is more than likely not his real name but the name on the script. He lives in either NY or LA, struggling infomercial to Sears ad and spends his life going to casting calls and getting rejected. Such is the life of a model/actor.
More than likely he waits tables or bartends as a sidejob.
