I have seen the phrase "I consider myself to be a Christian" and another...."I used to be a Christian but now I'm not"....
A true Bible Christian has to be 'saved' or 'born again'
John 3v3 says 'Jesus answered and said to him "Most assuredly I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the Kingdom of God"
In John 3v5 it says 'Jesus answered "Most assuredly I say to you, unless one is born of the water and Spirit he cannot enter the Kingdom of God"
How many that call themselves Christians are 'born again believers?
You were born into a Christian family...that does not make you a Christian. You were baptised as a child...that does not make you a Christian. You go to Church every Sunday and/or care group each week...does not make you a Christian. You say you believe in God...that does not make you a Christian(satan and his demons believe in God)
What then makes YOU a Christian?. Once a Christian..always a Christian by choice. If you're not, you never were.
Best wishes, Mike

You are born again only one time & not 2 or 3 Or every church service. Eph. 4:30 Greive not the Holy Spirit of God whereby ye are sealed(until the next revival) No, Until the day of redemption, That is the redemption of your body, A Born again person soul is what is redeem right now, not the body, that comes later. Therefore you can be born again only one time, the same as the natural birth. Many so called christians say there were born again years ago & slip away & came back & slip away, They were never born again to begin with, Eph. 1:4-5 & Romans 8:28 speaks of predestination. Now You ask me if I am born again, Yes, Since May 1970 & filled with that Seal of promise, which is the baptism in the Holy Ghost, therefore I have repented & was baptized in water by complete immursion in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ & was filled with the baptism of the Holy Ghost. That completes my new birth.

The trinity isn't a Catholic element in any respect, that's a ingredient of almost each Christian denomonation. Being 'born returned' is a greater straightforward term between protestants. And basically a observe to the guy who stated the King James Bible, i'm not sure the place you're getting your suggestion from yet that version is turning out to be much less and much less straightforward, maximum church homes at present use the NIV, and as for swearing on it, no person ought to surely swear on a Bible simply by fact the Bible itself says to not swear on something, "enable your particular verify and your no be no".

I have been a born again Christian ever since the Holy Spirit convicted me that Jesus is Lord.

I live my life for God and His Son Jesus, and have actively preached the gospel. I am now retired and I anxiously await His return.

I love the Lord my God with all my heart, mind and strength and I love my neighbor as myself.

Morkarleth, what some see as arrogance, others see as confidence.

spiritroaming, It is in John 3:3 that Jesus said, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." It is in John 3:5-6 that Jesus said, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. John 6:53-56 refers to being in communion with Jesus. It is in John 17:3 Jesus said, "And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent."

Is that long rant a question? or part of one?

Christ told his followers that he had some that were the little flock and that some were Other Sheep.

Bible study reveals, that the Little Flock are born again, Saints, that shall inherit the heavenly kingdom.
The Other Sheep shall live on earth.

In Rev 5:10, we see that the Saints shall become kings and priests and rule the earth. In Matt 5:5 Jesus told his followers that the "meek shall inherit the earth".

I have lived as you may say "on both sides of the fence". I was brought up here in a "Christian" country. I went to Sunday School and was taught Christianity at school. This did not make me a Christian although at the time I thought it did. I went to church (CofE) occationally but it really meant little to me until I heard an evangelist explain to me that my soul was in danger of being lost forever and explained that Jesus died for the forgiveness of my sin and I needed to receive Him as my Saviour. After making this choice I was filled with joy which dispite all the hardships that life bring is still with me now. The first part of my life I tried to "Do it my way" with very little sucess. The second part of my life, now in God's Kingdom, is filled with peace, joy and righteousness which is not my own but that of Jesus Christ as I am "in Christ"(If any one is "in Christ" he is a new creation :the old has passed away, behold the new has come. 2 Corinthians 5:17).(Romans 14 : 17 for the Kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit) Having experienced both sides of the fence the choice is always to remain a Christian even in hardship as I have received life and that in abundance. I have found that the Bible speaks the truth why believe otherwise.

ADDED LATER.
Perhaps I have not made myself clear on my wording. God's grace came into my life and He chose me first and opened my understanding so I could believe. I was quite happy going down the broad way and would of continued if The Holy Spirit had not revealed my state. But in answer to ANSWERS placed after I posted this. God chooses us but we are not machines we have been given a mind that can accept God or reject Him.

What makes you a Christian? I would say following the Gospels-God's word.
Many will be found wanting with a Bible in their hand.
Going to church is part of the community of believers, go if you can, after all Jesus went to the Temple to pray

I am a confessional Lutheran.

I am often asked by fundamentalist Christians if I have been born again. The only answer I can give them is YES!

They then ask me "when and how?" According to the Bible and what it teaches I have to give them two answers. 1. When Jesus Christ was nailed to the Cross for my sins. 2. At my baptism (as an infant). Baptism works. I can't remember a time when i didn't believe! The Bible says: "But ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God. 1 Cor. 6:11 KJV.

Everyone who has faith in, and follows the teachings of Jesus Christ AND the Bible is "born again".

p.s.: If we read Scripture we realize that we CAN NOT choose to follow Christ. Our sinful human nature (some Churches call it "original sin" the Bible calls it the old Adam in us) allows us to only reject and rebel against God.

Faith is a gift of God, a fruit of the spirit. We are given the gift of faith through the Holy Spirit.

The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther explains this in his Small Catechism regarding the third article of the Apostles Creed:

Sanctification

"I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the dead; and the life everlasting. Amen.

What does this mean? I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him; but the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith;
even as He calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian Church on earth, and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith;
in which Christian Church He daily and richly forgives all sins to me and all believers,
and will at the Last Day raise up me and all the dead, and give unto me and all believers in Christ eternal life.
This is most certainly true."

Regarding the non Biblical idea of once saved always saved...

The bible refers to a sin against the Holy Spirit, as being the only un-forgivable sin. This is the sin that one commits when having faith gives into the devil and freewill, and rejects God, turning away from his or her faith.

By "unforgivable" Scripture says that when one dies unrepentant of this sin one receives eternal damnation.

If one turns away from God, the repents, they again will be heirs of salvation.

Mike, I don't know, I don't know. I just don't know how to answer.I wish I did, but I can't and you sound almost angry. All I can truthfully say is this. I feel God in my head and my heart. If I try to ignore it I feel bereft and empty. When I try to explore it I get confused and pannicky. My faith is strong and I thank God every day for my blessings and His beautiful world but I can't make sense or find truth. I am not usually stupid or cowardly but recently I find I can't reconcile my unworthiness. How do I hold my head up as a Christian when I know that come the day of reckoning I will cower at the back not daring to face Him? I will never be good enough, pure enough, worthy enough but I love Him and will never stop trying.

You call yourself a christian by choice, but we all know god is the one that call us into Christianity therefore it is not by choice but Gods will. So by choice you live within the christian value that is set by man for man like the Amish, except you don't see it like that. Because you don't have a horse & buggy and live mixed with the evil doers and are tempted by the very things to hope would go away, like sex, gaming, drinking but pray for a job, marrige children to subject them to the very world you people refused to change for the better. Because god never taught you that working for low wages or allowing others to do so was a sin, and when they are paid more the rent goes up.

At one point I changed from everything I was to everything I will be. Jesus was and is and will be everything of what I am about. Do I relate to people on an everyday basis, of course. But when I was 18 and gave my life to Christ I have and will be on a different course than when I started because I was and am born again!
