I think it's different for all children because my 21month old son doesn't put things were they're not supposed to go but my youngest daughter decided that it would be a good idea to put beads up her nose at nearly 4 years. You could try telling them a firm NO when they are putting something towards their mouths but other than that they should just grow out of it

My 15 month old daughter and 27 month old son and they still put things in their mouthes.
I think maybe around 3 or 3 and a half but all children are different and stop doing it at different ages.
Yes for us it means we need our eyes on them 24/7 but for them they are just exploring and have no idea what they are putting in their mouths could be dangerous.
Best of luck

Most stop putting little things in thier mouths by 2 (start bringing things to mum and dad that they know they shouldnt have for example), but my daughter had a dirt fetish problem and kept eating dirt right up until kindy :( shes 5 now and hasnt had anything dodgy to eat in a looonnnnggg time.

The 7 month old has got a ways to go, but the 16th month old is old enough now for you to explain that stuff is yukky or dangerous.

goodluck!

Their mouth is one of the most sensitive parts of their body, and they are learning about textures and taste, etc. They will learn what to put in their mouths and what not to, mainly through their own exploration. As long as you keep the items clean, safe and age appropriate, don't worry about it.
If you think about it, even adults put things in their mouths to chew on, such as pens, chewing gum, etc, so we never really grow out of it.

my son is about to turn three and still puts things in his mouth - I always remind him not to but it makes no difference. My girls never really bothered much once they got to about two

They stop when they realize that some things taste bad. When did you kids stop? If they were 10 you might have something to worry about.

I'm 47 and still breast feeding, so I wouldn't worry if I were you.
