I've been trying to design this tattoo for about 4 years now and I've met with little success. Basically, I want a graphic representation of the concept of "motion without movement." If that was a little obscure, try this: "motion is achieved not through locomotion (such as walking, running, etc.) but rather through a shifting of ones perception from one moment in time to another." This has much to do, of course, with the concept of time as a sphere wherein every point exists simultaneously, rather than as a line.

The really frustrating thing about this is that I can picture in my head the size, rough shape, and colours of this, but I can't for the life of me draw out the the details. Please, hit me with your best suggestions.

What about the symbol of triskele or triskelion? It has three bent legs conjoined at the crotch, as if in movement but at the same time centered and going nowhere. Another version of it has three spirals.

You can't do the skull thing unless it is also on fire.

Seriously, I would look into mathematical symbols and go from there. I always thought that the closed integral symbol was elegant, and the infinity symbol seems popular.

Failing that, you can find a physicist or physics student and ask them to explain the concept with a picture.

some wiki to start off with:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Table_of_mathematical_symbols

Wow, this is a fascinating concept for a tattoo!

I keep imagining a sphere with all of these wide arrows sweeping around it's exterior. These arrows/vectors are going in every direction and they are illustrated to feel like fast, continious movement . Your sphere is trapped inside a cube, keeping it from moving, yet everything inside that box is moving like crazy.

Hi, Try an Irish fairy Flying with the colors of purple, red and a nice green color not to dark and not to lite. You can make the wings look like they are getting ready to fly. Have her red hair flowing back with the wind. This would be a very nice tattoo. You can add more if you can think of any improvements. To be honest i have an Irish tattoo that's like the one i just described. I get a lot of comments about it from men and women. Lol Lol

*"motion is achieved not through locomotion (such as walking, running, etc.) but rather through a shifting of ones perception from one moment in time to another."*

Hmmm, let's see. I'm horrible with physics, but I can touch a bit on the metaphysical side. Have you considered an animal shapeshifting into another? Or an hourglass in an orb? Oh, or an hourglass with the infinty symbol entwined around it?

Best of luck, let us know what you choose!

you should consult with a custom tattoo artist. 1. they are real artists that can create drawings from descriptions and pictures.
2. they will be able to draw something that can easily be translated from paper to skin (not all drawings make good tattoos)
3. if you do your research you can find a phenomenal artist who can draw your design and tattoo you and give you something worth having.
if you need help finding an artist i'd be glad to help.

maybe it cannot be drawn because its a theory. in your mind is the representation and drawing it is the symbol. maybe a circle or an arrow. physics concepts are best as graphs and interpretations w/n sciences, not anything else. oh maybe you should go and get one somewhere and then decide if you wnat to go farther
