liebekatz2. yeah I had 19 I think it was, it's not a great option.

I have been off all forms of treatment for a good while now, but am not at all smug about it.

that's so encouraging, I have to say despite my own deep reservations, those who know and love me best, thought there was a noticeable improvement after treatment.

I had it couple years ago in and outpatient for severe depression. It certainly worked at the time. There has been some memory loss. I consider it a small price to pay since I am able to type this here today.

Good luck and take care of you!

It's not as awful as most people think it is. It's done very safely these days and can sometimes be the only thing that helps. I know someone who went through it and it did help his treatment-resistant depression for a while, but it wreaked havoc on his memory. I wouldn't want to do it for that reason alone. I already worry a lot about forgetting important events in my life.

I agree with the first answer.

It can be life saving for some people.
I think it is often a better option that the way the patient is living already.
I work in an operating room and we perform some ECT. It is very calm and not violent - people are well anaesthetised. They are quite coherent and fine afterwards.
There is some short term memory loss around the few days that they have the ECT.

I think we are all horrified by ECT as it was so well depicted in One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest.

It is really no different from performing a cardiac shock to bring heart back into rythym.

I think it is a good form of treatment for medication resistant severe depression...

I am told there is some memory loss but i guess it a small price to pay for feeling back to your normal self and not suicidal or manic..

should only be used as a last resort if all else fails. i have assissted with a lot of ect, when i worked for a mental health facility. i have seen it work quite well for a lot of people. short term memory is a problem but ususally it is short lived.

I have worked in a hosp where this was used and it was invaluable for some - but only as a last resort.

I have medication-resistant depression, and I feel like sh!t most of the time. If ECT would work, I would be willing to try it. Did you have it done?
