My dog ran out of the house and right in to the road once and was hit by a car. That same year my mom had a car accident and she had to get a new car that same month. Oh, not to mention the day my dog was hit by a car it was the morning of Valentine's Day. Also my mom's a single parent with not much extra income at all.
Anyway, we rushed my dog over to the emergency pet clinic. He's a small dog, toy poodle, so there was a lot of damage done. He had to get some organs repaired and metal plates put in his legs so he could walk. Total bill was about five grand and we're still paying it off.
So that day, I had to miss school and some guy waited for me for a long time at my locker to give me something apparently and he thought I stood him up. So I had to deal with that problem. Oh, not to mention after my dog did get back home he had bladder problems for two weeks so their was constant leakage and pee everywhere. Someone always had to be there with him for the first three weeks because we had to make sure he was able to pee and that he didn't move around too much. It was very stressful and I couldn't go out with friends ever.
Anyways, now it's a couple months later and he's fine, but because of that bill which we put all our extra income in to paying off every month, money has become very very tight. I couldn't even take the summer college class I wanted and have to worry about getting a decent job in order to pay for my school supplies and such.
All in all though, I don't mind it because I'm just so glad I have him and he's safe. As crazy as this makes me sound, when the vet told me the chances of my dog surviving it all were close to nothing, I became suicidal. I was with my dog the day he was born and helped in the delivery and I don't know how I'd be without him. Now he's a million dollar doggy and I'd pay for and do whatever possible again if he were in the same situation.
Oh..and I guess I didn't mention. We got a second glass door so that now when we open it, we have the glass to protect him from running out but it'll still let us talk to who's ever at the door if they don't plan on coming in.

My fiance and I used to splurge on ourselves alot, buy each other surprises randomly, buy movies, go out to eat, go see movies, go to friends houses, have friends over (more often), we used to do tons of things! Now a nice date is us getting drive through taking the dog to the park and letting him chase the ducks, then taking him to the dog park and watching him play with other dogs. Or getting something delivered. We can't go out any more because I feel bad for leaving him at home alone. Even right now he is trying to play with me so I can't do what I want/need on the internet. And I have spoiled him so much! I buy him a new fun treat or a toy anytime we go grocery shopping because I feel so bad for leaving him alone! We also don't get to snuggle in bed anymore because Gimli, our pup, has to be right between us or on our pillows (like he is a hat) or he is not happy. We also have to drive when ever we go on a trip because I will not leave him here, but I am scared how he would react on a plane, even though he would fly in the cabin! I wouldn't trade him for anything, but I wish I could go out more!

My dog's food is healthier than mine. In a few months, my dog will have health insurance and I won't. I work third shift, so I wake up several times during the day to let my puppy out and play with him, even if I'm exhausted (normally my fiance does this, but he's out of town!). I constantly research ways I could better train my pup and make him healthier, while I should really work out more.

I'm driving 1,000 miles to my wedding so my dog doesn't have to ride in the cargo hold of a plane to Wisconsin in October.

I love my pup and wish I could do more! :D

The only sacrifice I can think of is not traveling as much as I like. I have 3 cats and 3 dogs.

My dogs eat better food than we do. There have been times whenwe will eat macaroni for dinner because we'll chose to pay the $60 on their food instead of getting my own groceries. I also tend to put off doctor appointments and will take my animals into the vet's before I'll get anything on myself checked out.

I learned how to train dogs. I left a steady job with a decent salary, health insurance, education benefits, to move here and buy a Dog Day Care, where I can be with my dogs every day. I sold my house, most of my 'stuff', said goodbye to my best friends and left a state I loved to work with dogs.

My husband and I had to split up during hurricane Katrina because we couldn't take our pets. We had a foreign exchange student living with us, and we HAD to evacuate her, so I took her and left, and my husband stayed home and rode out the storm with our pets. We aren't the only ones who did that, of course, we have heard a lot of similar stories from other people who wouldn't leave their pets behind to fend for themselves...they are part of the family.

i wash cars sometimes to earn money to take my dog to the vet even though my dad will happily pay for it because i feel good earning it for him.
once i had taken him for a walk and there was a hailstorm and i ran under the tree with him and sat there ...it was really cold and the wind was bringing the rain towards us so i took off my scarf and wrapped it around him because he was shivering and getting vet and i hugged hin to keep him warm and sat there freezing for 45 minutes trying to keep him dry and warm in the rain!!
once i hat a real bad tooth ache but i didnt take an appointment with the dentist coz my dog was sick and i had to take him to the vet and i had to stay awake for 3 nights to take car of him and make sure he was getting better...and then five days after my tooth ache i went to the dentist to get my tooth checked and it cost me extra money as i had not shown the tooth earlier and it had become worse in those 5 days! even after all this,i love him soo much and i cant live without him!

Not going on vacation because we refuse to use a dog kennel. Have done it before and our poor dog was sick for a week, when we got back home.
So now we rely on family or our neighbors if they are available.
