It depends which greatwall u wanna go. Let me write u a brief explanation about this.
Badaling greatwall is the biggest one, is very near from Beijing, less than an hour by car. A lot of people go there, coz it is famous.. but yeah, from my point of view, i dont really like it.. no speciality.. just very big n very high.
Mutianyu greatwall is also great. I like it more than Badaling, around 1-1.5 hours from Beijing. Well, some people said this greatwall isn't too good. U better go n check it out ^^
Then still have Jinshanling and Simatai, both are very old. Especially simatai (the oldest one), very steep n a bit difficult to climb. But the view, o my god.. its really amazing!! Everybody said the same things about this.
These greatwall are near to each other.. about 3-3.5 hours from Beijing.
I hope u r satisfy with my answers ^^

its is a big wall run for over 3000 miles. yes near Beijing is the most popular.
I use a good site to find out about things to see and do in China. it is www.itsaboutchina.com . It has been of great help particularly the tour guides. You can email them for help.

there are several portions of the great wall and it depends on which portion you go to, but Badaling is the closest and most popular, i think it is less than 2 hours (still not exactly 'close').
