My puppy has started scooting his rear on the carpet. I know this is a sign that his anal glands need to be expressed, but I can't seem to master it. I really don't want to pay a vet bill for something that I know can be done easily at home. I'm watching it to make sure they don't swell too badly and if they do I will take him in. I was just wondering if any of you were experienced at this and could give me some pointers.

I've done research on it and the worms thing is pretty much just a myth. They usually only scoot when they are having issues with the glands.

It would be wise for you to take your dog to the vet and to have the vet SHOW you how to PROPERLY express the anal sacs..yes it can be done at home, but if improperly done you could be looking at paying a much higher vet bill then simple anal sac expression since you could cause damage.

You can also try a groomer, usually they are cheaper. Have them show you exactly how to do it. I know there is a video on You Tube, but it is worthless.

The best thing is hands on and in person.

I've seen many dogs do this...never in my life have any of my dogs needed anything done to anal glands. Most times they do it because of an itch or sometimes it's worms.

Some groomers do it as well and generally charge less than a vet. You might want to check the prices with groomers near you.

I ussually just do the anals when I bathe them.. a friend of mine told me how to do it, basically you grab ahold on both sides of the anus, and squeeze like you are squeezing something out of a tube.
