Its probably nothing. My dogs nip there all the time. You should bring your dog to the vet and ask them. Also, check underneath the fur to make sure there is no open wound or ticks etc..

My dog does this a lot as does my neighbour's dog. From what we have been told by the vet it can be caused by a few reasons. It can be caused by an external irritant, like weedkillers used in public areas, these can irritate the pads on the paws, so they will start chewing around the area. There is also a very large possibility that it is an allergy causing a localised irritation. If you are worried about it then speak to your vet, they will be able to check to make sure that he isn't causing any damage and may be able to give you something to sort it out.

it could be that he stepped in something that is bothering him, something could be stuck in the fur between his toes. if he is hurting himself by doing it try trimming the fur so you can get a better look at the area, if there is nothing there and it looks red and or irritated from his chewing try putting a sock on his foot. you may have to secure it above the "knee" bend with a piece of string or something, and he may just tear that off also. if it persists and you cant figure out what is causing it and he gets a sore take him to the vet because it can very easily become infected just from walking around.

Your dog is seeking attention. If you give it attention already it's become addicted. If you see a veterinarian about it you may be advised that your dog can have some medication for this : it will make the dog calmer. If you want to cure it yourself it would be better to give the dog more exercise and a regular [weekly?] bath.

i dont think you can stop him..but keep an eye on this as my dog did the same to his front paw...turned out that he had a grass seed stuck in it which had become infected. he is now on anti biotics & pain killers.

IMHO, this behavior is usually associated with environmental or food allergies.
