I felt the same way about my dog but when I re-homed him the RSPCA included neutering as part of the agreement, otherwise they wouldn't let me have him. However, since having it done six months ago there is no noticeable change in his personality: he still loves to fetch a ball and all the fun a dog has. In fact there is no change in him at all. He's a happy fun loving dog. Of course. there are the obvious results of neutering - that he will not stray, possibly causing a traffic accident, getting himself killed and as mentioned above, the fathering of unwanted puppies. One thing swayed me in favour of neutering and that was that the vet told me he would get a greater life expectancy i.e. live longer than an untreated dog.

Would it make you feel better when he ends up with testicular cancer later in life?

Or breaks out of your home and gets hit by a car in pursuit of a female dog in heat?

Or becomes aggressive and bites you, someone else or gets in a nasty fight due to his raging hormones?

How about that he impregnates a dog, then all those pups have puppies, and all those puppies have puppies, and so on and so on and so on - and because of all these puppies that were the result of you "feeling bad" hundreds of puppies are euthanized at the shelters because there's that many less homes adopting a puppy from the shelter?

You're doing the right thing. It's better for the dog, for pet overpopulation and for you to have him neutered. Your dog won't notice he's "less" of a dog - because he won't be. He'll be a healthy, happy, long living dog just like the thousands that are neutered every day.

PS: you're not getting your dog "desexed" - he's still going to be a boy - not a eunuch lol

he will be fine.. he doesnt even know what those parts are there for.

I think its crueler to leave your dog intact if you dont plan on breeding. A friend of mine has an intact male, and the poor lil fella always looks so frustrated. Expecially when there's a female nearby.. he gets so upset because he wants to do what instincts tell him to do.. but he cant because he's kept away from that female. He paces and whines.. its pitiful watching him.

My guy has been neutered since he was 5 months old. He could care less about the available ladies.. he wants to know where the treats are.

He will make a better pet. He will be more focused on you instead of trying to hunt down a female.

I know how you feel. I felt the same when my dog was neutered. I even asked a question here! Your feeling and the thoughts of the answerer above derive from our human way of thinking. Well, turns out dogs don't think like we do.He didn't seem to care. He was itchy for about a week, but he was fine very soon, I don't think he even knew what was missing. For males the operation is very simple and not even visible. And afterwards he stopped being frustrated by his hormones and having problems with other dogs. He was much better. Just watch his weight!

Well, the argument is that the dog will behave 'better' and won't cause unwanted pregnancies. But if a greater being took away my sex, I couldn't help but feel that a big part of my being was taken without a choice. I would live on rather blankly and without excitement since something that was a big part of who I am was now gone. The sense of loss would be overwhelming. So I guess the only question is, do you want your dog to be the way he was born to be or would you rather have a calmer and more agreeable house dog that has lost a sense of self?

You must be a man feeling this way. LOL
Your dog will be Ok, and make him a much better, healthier pet. I had my Chi. altered two months ago. she is only 3 yrs. and done had pre cancer. Must have caught it just in time.
I learned my lesson, all my pets defenetly get altered. Males run into problems also not getting altered. Just don't let him run, jump or get alot of exercise for the first week. I would defenetly do it. It will all be OK.. Good luck, God bless

Would you feel better taking away the life of a shelter dog? If you leave your dog intact and he mates with a female, this is the potential. You're doing a good thing, and the world of dogs is thanking you! =)

You are most likely to find he is a better dog. And it is easier to deal with an altered male in so many situations. You are making the right choice. Breeding dogs is so involved and people don't realize what they are doing when they breed without proper knowledge and ethics.

Great job! Your dog will be fine.

It is completely normal to feel guilty whenever you are inflicting any discomfort (even if imagined) on your baby. You would be a bad parent if you didn't feel bad. But trust me...You are doing the absolute best thing for him. He won't miss them, I promise! He won't even be in too much pain for very long. In the long run you will be very glad you did it.

Your dog will live a longer, healthier life, and won't spray on the furniture. Just do it.
