there is a phrase out there that has been commonly used by Hollywood - "art imitates life"
and then there are those that twist it in reference to the bizarre & sinister:
"life imitates art"
there is always a connection between life and art, otherwise, we would not have become the advanced civilization that we are today.
People use the arts in everything everyday. Aesthetics, design, music, colors, photography, drama, crafting tools, etc etc etc.
The Arts encompass all that is unique about humans and enrich our lives. Art may imitate life, but life as we know it cannot exist without art.

The way I understand it is that an artist (a true artist, not some of these hacks that we award artistic status to) is more in tune with the emotional realm of existence. (They feel deeper.)
These deeper emotions are in us all but, many are not aware of them. The responsibility of the artist is to make the people aware of the emotions that are hidden within, to show us our true selves, thus making a connection between the art and the life of the beholder.
