Since when have mormons been against rock music? Since..... always. The profit always condemns it, don't deny it. We (siblings and I) caught hell all the time for listening to rock music.

I hold this church partially responsible for my having been molested by my step-father for many years, including a pregnancy and abortion at age 12. Step-father told the bishop and four elders of the church that he was molesting myself and my sisters. They did nothing. He was told he couldn't come to the church for one year. That was it. They told no one. They KNEW and let it continue.
When I was in high school, my sister told the then-bishop (a different one) what was going on. He ended up losing his teaching job at the high school and had to move due to not telling the authorities.
The Mormons have no ethics.

The Church does not condemn rock music. I have never heard the Prophet ever say that we can't listen to rock music, and I do all the time and my dad is in the bishopric, so i think if the prophet had said anything he would know. Now, hard, heavy metal isn't probably something we should listen to, because it detracts from the Spirit, and isn't very good to listen to. Like songs that are full of swear words.

I've never heard that the church is against rock music. I am Mormon and believe me, I'm addicted to Blink 182 and Green Day. If you're talking about Marilyn Manson, that's another thing. You know what is good and what is bad and to listen music that has satanic, sexual and violent lyrics and are like persuading you to make wrong things is not good because it is something that doesn't bring something good and positive to your life, those things just destroy you. Ah! and the subliminal messages are a fact too in that kind of music.
But there is nothing wrong with other rockers like Simple Plan, Wheatus, Avril Lavigne, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, my dear Blink 182 (I <3 Tom), Green Day and others like those. They keep it clean [sometimes] and doesn't have push you to make wrong things like Led Zeppeling and Marilyn Manson. But however, I think it is up to the person. If there is a LDS that likes those kind of music it doesn't mean that that person is a bad person or that he/she is completly disobeying the church standarts, but they could always listen something better.

How about this, there are Mormons who own casinos in Las Vegas. That does NOT mean that the Chruch owns them. There are MEMBERS of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who own businesses that are not in agreement with what our faith teaches.

As for rock music in general, I think you have us confused with Baptists. We are only told to be aware of what we are listening to and choose our music carefully. Listen to the lyrics and know what thoughts are being put into our heads and our children's heads. If you can answer yes to the following questions, then it is fine to listen to:

Does this song:
give me a good uplifted feeling?
represent all that I stand for being a Christian?
give a message that Christ would want to listen to?

Edit: I'm listening to this station and haven't heard a single song that would not be played at one of our church dances. YES, you read right. CHURCH DANCE! Sponsored by and held at our buildings.

Edit: I have been listening to this station since I posted the answer and not one single song played yet that I would not hear at a church dance.

The Mormon church is not against Rock music despite what you claim you have experienced. It is however, against ANY music that is obscene, vulgar or inappropriate, regardless of the style. Get your facts straight and stop manufacturing reasons to bash the Mormon church.

Oh yea, the Mormon church had a big campaign in the 70's and 80's in Utah abotu backmasking and drug use in the rock music and the meaning of what bands meant like styxs was the river to hell and ACDC meant they would go both ways ect. (RUSH was a drug rush) they do own radio stations in UT that have stricky mormon music on it. To speak for their side because they cannot, the rock station owned by them probably takes out swear words in the rock songs and offensive words, I have heard it in UT when I go down there and visit, but YES it is a rock station and goes against their backmasking preaching, you can't edit backmasking.

I don't mind if the Church is the DJ. As a father, I feel that's actually kind of cool (and a relief).

Ezra Taft Benson (1971, the year I was born) "We love the youth of the Church and we know the Lord loves them. There isn’t anything the Church wouldn’t do that’s right to help our young people—to save them. They are our future. We have faith in them. We want them to be happy. We want them to be successful in their chosen fields. We want them to be exalted in the celestial kingdom.

"We say to them, you are eternal beings. Life is eternal. You cannot do wrong and feel right. It pays to live the good, wholesome, joy-filled life. Live so you will have no serious regrets—no heartaches. Live so you can reach out and tap that unseen Power, without which no man or woman can do their best."

-- It may be tough to be and stay clean, but it's totally worth it. Be the best you can be ...

“Verily I say unto you all: Arise and shine forth, that thy light may be a standard for the nations.” (D&C 115:5.)

“For Zion must increase in beauty, and in holiness; her borders must be enlarged; her stakes must be strengthened; yea, verily I say unto you, Zion must arise and put on her beautiful garments.” (D&C 82:14.)

“Wherefore, lift up your hearts and rejoice, and gird up your loins, and take upon you my whole armor, that ye may be able to withstand the evil day, having done all, that ye may be able to stand.” (D&C 27:15.)

Hmm..since when are Mormons against rock music?

And to Araiha, we can drink sodas.

Sketch, the Word of Wisdom does not speak against Caffeine. It speaks against alcohol, tobacco, coffee, and tea.

Edit - can you elaborate a little more? Did the particular kind of music you listened to speak of thinks like drugs, sex, violence, etc? Because LDS ARE taught to stay away from that kind of stuff. But you simply said "Rock music". I happen to like a lot of rock music, and none of it has to do with drugs, violence, etc.

I'm not denying what you are saying but I hope you don't deny me either. I am a lifelong member of the church, so it's not like I am ignorant.

Sounds like your parents are the ones against rock music. Plus if you listen to the lyrics of some of the songs, wouldn't it be understandable for them to be against those songs.

When "Stairway to Heaven" is sung at Sacrament, I'll be impressed - but only if they use traditional instruments and real tube amplification.

Most station managers create their own playlists, not the owner, but remember: all 'commercial' media stations exist for one purpose: Advertising. Entertainment is just filler between pitches for cars, boob enhancements and lawyers. Advertising brings in big bucks, and the church is, if anything else, Big Money.

175 years ago the church was beyond bankrupt, so they've altered their strategy and modeled their organization after Sears-Roebuck. But don't forget your fast offering.
