Why don't you put a second litter box closer to where the main living area is? Not only will it be easier for the kitty but I'm sure you'll keep it MUCH cleaner that tucked away in the garage. Kittens are usually really good about using the litter box - yours is just confused because he's got to travel so far to find it! You could easily stick one in your bathroom, corner of the kitchen or in a utility room. I actually have one in one of my bedroom. And does it smell? Absolutely not. I scoop it daily and use wood stove pellet litter that totally takes away the urine odor.

First of all, a kitten at 3 months is still too young to hold his bladder for so long. By the time he feels the urge, it's too late. It's therefore important that the box be placed near the area where he spends most of his time. When he is five or six months, you can move the box towards the basement a few feet at a time. Gong down the stairs for such a tiny kitty is really too much. As for banishing him to the basement, he will probably grow up a little detached from you. So If you want the kitty to remain charming and cuddly, put the litter box in the bathroom or in a corner of the kitchen. You can get the covered varieties that keep the smell to a minimum.
As for the couch, make sure you get the smell off completely.

Good luck!! I had that problem once myself, and could never break its bad habbit, so had to get rid of it. Cats are habbitual animals, so when they have a bad habbit it is hard to break them of it. I would move its liter box more closer to where the cat stays most often!! and two, could try to crate it for a week or etc.. till your sure it knows what a liter box is all about. also they claim that one cat should have two liter boxes. Make sure it is not perfumed liter as most cats do not like that kind, make sure the liter box is big enough. Big plastic (low, short ones) storage container makes a great liter box. I had much luck with that. Best of luck. God bless

My kitten became weaned suitable from her mom and that i took her homestead at 8 weeks, notwithstanding, the week I delivered her homestead, she stopped ingesting the frustrating cat nutrition she were ingesting on the homestead the place she lived together with her mom. In a week's time, she had misplaced quite a number of weight and had not eaten in any respect. for 3 weeks, I had to combine canned cat nutrition with dry kitten chow, and each and every day I blended a touch greater dry nutrition and quite much less canned nutrition, and finally, she became decrease back to ingesting the kitten chow together with her sister. i think of it became only an adjustment problem. wait and notice and he or she'll be superb. with the aid of the way, 3 month previous cats now not have a dietary prefer for formulation; you will desire to truly supply up giving it to her - the older she gets the greater durable this is going to likely be to interrupt her from the milk.

get a water gun. keep it next to you on the sofa. when u catch him going spray him. Then pick him up and carry him to litter box, after he does his business in the litter box reward him with a cat treat u can find at pet smart. Repeat as necessary. U can break a bad habit with time and patience.
Also look into getting him neutered. He may just be spraying as male cats tend to do.

try moving his litter box closer to him... if that is not an option.. then keep him in the garage... make him use it.. just let him get use to it.. i have a kitten... we pottytrained him but we had had the litter box in the kitchen... which is gross.. so when we moved it to the garage he started pooping in the kitchen where his litter box used to be... but you should just get him used to being in the garage to do his business..
