I just came back from NYC and was suprised how this city is nasty and DIRTY!! And what the hell is it with vapors comming out of sewers in the afternoon? What is that? Why does it happen?

Vapors better known as steam. Used for power, in old-fashioned heating and cooling systems. The orange pipes in the street are venting steam leaks; a slow leak is better than the explosions that happen occasionally!

Those vapors are usually natural gas leaks. They stink up a neighborhood quickly.
