According to the Surname Profiler, Smith ranks No. 1 in both 1881 and 1998. Incidentally, the map attached below shows just where all the Smiths are located.

It must be one of the ones that derived from trades centuries ago, like Smith, Weaver, Potter, Taylor, and Hunter.

Oh, and I have two unrelated friends in London who are both named Brown.
