Go on, pat a dog today

Remember that the mind of a dog works on a different, less complicated level than our own. We can only base our speculation on dog behaviour on our knowledge of other pack animals.

The range of interpretations by your dog depends on how 'clever' your dog is. Things will appear either simply as threat/non-threat (daft dog), through to a point where the dog is probably smarter than the owner (clever dog) and the dog's interpretations of your motives are more closely analysed.

To all dogs, physical touch, [if the dog will allow it] is likely to be interpreted as peer-to-peer bonding / grooming. So, sorry, the dog doesn't have a clue what kissing is.

Dogs can groom themselves, but constantly use pack-bonding exercises and see trusted others initiate the bonding exercises. As pack animals, they groom the groomer to complete the exercise. They will lick you first as a means of setting this off, to determine if you still accept it's position in the pack. The dog then expects to be groomed (head pats, stroking, kissed, etc) as confirmation.

That the dog allows you to physically get close to it with your face (and more importantly your teeth), you will have been accepted as at least a groomer and as having no intention of attacking / eating it. Where the dog allows this, the very fact that you are close is likely to be interpreted positively as grooming. You will have been inserted into the dogs hierarchy as a more important / same level / less important groomer. No animal likes (what it interprets as) a less important groomer touching it - coz it doesn't always accept that dog within its pack.

No one has yet spoken to a dog, so we won't know for certain until they have (yes, I'm aware that some may claim to have tried and succeeded, but that's hardly conclusive, is it). So all of the above is very general. If a dog allows you to get close enough to touch it, it doesn't feel threatened and will probably respond by grooming you (ie: licking you and wagging his tail). Our human interpretations is that this indicates the dog is happy.

Trust me you'll know when your dog loves you. Just like when you know someone loves you..mother,father,sister...etc.

You'll get that warm tingly feeling and the need to hug something.

Plus they'll always come to you and wag their tale extra hard, and make sure to give you an extra lick or two.

:D You may not feel it right now...but trust me you will. The little small acts like when they protect you...or do a trick that you've taught them...

Hope this helps!

I think dogs know what petting, kissing, etc is. For example: if I leave my hand hanging down, my dog will come and put herself under it, so I can pet her. Also, if she's sitting or laying and not looking at me, if I touch her and start petting her, she starts wagging her tail and looks at me with a happy look. So yes, I think they do. :)
