I have respect for my parents. Why? They love me and raised me the best they knew how. Sure they made mistakes, but who hasn't?

As a general rule, no, we do not follow it. Of course there are many exceptions. But our society as a whole, I don't think so.
Why, is not a short easy answer. We could cite general decay of manners, music, tv, wrong crowd, lack of discipline, to much governmental interference with parenting, teenage or immature parents etc.................
I see parents leaving their children with virtual strangers, screaming at them in public, not disciplining them as needed, ignoring them, not talking to them as people.
My personal opinion is that parents no longer respect their children. Therefore they can not teach respect and they certainly have not earned it.

Follow? No, I never follow.
Parents, like anyone else, vary in being deserving of respect. Alcoholic, abusive parents, for example, deserve none, no matter what that old book says.

Some do. Some do not.
Why? Human frailty....and non-acceptance of Scriptural standards.
