If I did a lot of cardio and shed the layer of fat around my gut would I be able to get a sixpack without doing crunches/situps and ab workouts in general?

No.
You need some form of workout to achieve muscle tone "six pack" If you continue to shed away layers you will be left with just a flat tummy!

Well, if you have a layer of fat around your gut then you won't be able to see the results of the ab workout no matter how many crunches you do. What makes the most sense is to do the cardio and lose the fat. But it doesn't hurt to do some type of strength/tone exercise too.

You don't have to do a gazillion crunches or buy some overpriced gadget. You can get good results from a 5 min ab workout done correctly.

unless you had strong abs before your weight gain/loss, you probably will need to do some kind of core strengthening. Crunches and sit ups are not the only ex for abs. Anything that requires contracting the core muscle groups will work them. All muscles require a work out in order to get bigger just like your biceps.

You'd get a six pack faster at the corner store if you don't do some sit-ups and crunches that help with symmetry of the abdominal muscle group.

If you put six sodas on your belly then yes.. lol

Seriously though.. try boxing it targets everything

With boxing you can target your abs and still do cardio at the same time. While either losing more fat or maintaining the weight you're at.

Hands down yes. The idea that crunches give you a six pack is completely dated and not true.

most definetly with the right diet.

exercise only provides the necessary stimulus to the muscles and CNS. the diet ultimately determines the level of body fat. a great diet and plenty of high intensity cardio is all that's needed.
