It was a patriarchal society back then and God in his wisdom knew a woman would certainly not have been listened to no matter who she claimed to be. It would have taken a serious miracle just to keep her alive long enough to get an audience let alone followers. Look how they treated Mary Magdalene after Christ left. Even the Apostles weren't very nice to her and they knew exactly who she was. However in their case it could have also been jealousy.
For that matter look how women are treated now in the Middle East. It hasn't changed that much.
