Okay, when I said "everyone," I didn't LITERALY mean everyone. Just a whole ******* hell of a lot of people.
And in response to "hotchotlver" - tattoos were originally a TRIBAL thing. They didn't start off with sailors and pirates... many of the most primitive tribes in the world today are COVERED in tattoos. In fact, they recently found a PREHISTORIC frozen ice man who was covered in tattoos. Do your homework before you answer...

Okay, I know I've added a lot to this question, but just one more... I read back over my full question and realized how mean I sound... I am actually asking because I'm genuinely curious (my tattoos are VERY obscure and individual). I really don't mean to be mean in asking this question, and really don't know why I sound so angry. Maybe it's because I've got a lot of pent-up rage at the world and the people in it... that's another topic, sorry... so, yeah... in summation: I'm sorry my question sounded so mean and WHY ARE YOU ALL SHEEP?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Probably the reason that people are drawn to dragon tattoos is that the image of a dragon means; Power, Strength, Honor, Dignity and many other power words. I have a tribal dragon tattoo on my left shoulder that will have my childrens birth month flowers beneath the wings... signifying my devotion to my child(ren) and my strength to be a good father and mentor. My mother and step dad have matching dragon tattoos signifying everlasting love for one another and devotion to each other. Yeah dragons are kinda over down, but many have deep rooted reasons for getting the tattoo

Well, I almost qualify as the focus of your question. It's not a dragon, though - it's a koi transforming into a dragon as it makes the leap through Dragon's Gate. I'd be intrigued to find anyone with the same design (and I won't even try for the whole back piece), since I couldn't find anything like it to give my artist an idea of where to go. The whole thing (5 koi, one gold - the dragon-koi - 3 orange and one black/blue) is a custom piece, and the dragon-koi her design. Better than the drastically different designs I found, and I looked around quite a lot. The fauna are less important than what the collection means, so perhaps you're thinking more individual tattoos of, say, the critters involved.
However, although it wouldn't appeal to me, technically there is nothing wrong with a person getting something similar to another person's design. Identical would be weird, but all the artists I know *really* want to do custom work & wouldn't do that. I dunno - sometimes maybe people just want a cheeseburger? If it makes them happy, and they don't care what anyone else thinks, isn't that for the best?
With respect to the mummy recovered from ice (the one from the Alps in 1992), assuming we're talking about the same thing, one report proposed that the tattoos were done posthumously. Some kind of protection after death, I think. It doesn't change the fact that very likely tattoos generally existed at the time, but the article I remember didn't detail a tattoo done akin to modern situations. At least a few other articles considered the possibility of it being part of a medical treatment. I think there are actually multiple examples of neolithic & earlier tattooed humans, so we might be talking about different things.
And at the risk of seeming snarky & I apologize if so... when you end with commentary of being sorry about being so pent up with rage and then raise your voice calling everyone here (the "you" as opposed to a "they" comment) sheep, well... you don't expect the most civil response, do you?

The same tattoo makes no difference. Each tattoo has a different meaning to the person with it. I have the Kanji for Dragon instead of the actual dragon for my own reasons. Try to look at it as more of how different are the purposes rather than why can't anyone get anything original. Have a nice day!

i don't have it yet cause i can't draw exactly what i want, but i plan to get a dragon on my ankle with my H. it won't be just like everyone elses. my dragon will be a guardian of sorts. my tats so far represent something very important to me. my arm has the what and the why, my ankle has the when and the dragon will be there to keep me from going backwards. not that that makes much sence to most people. i also want a winged unicorn, another overdone tattoo, but it will be my own design too

Ok you know that not EVERYONE has a dragon tattoo....but for the people that do....some do have one because they are doing what others are doing....some have one because its a sign of good luck and fortune....Then there is the Chinese calendar for the year of the dragon....I have one because I always wanted one...Dragons are beautiful creatures whether they existed or not. Besides thats like asking why does EVERYONE have a tattoo period. Its a fashion trend that has picked up over the centuries...the people that ORIGINALLY had tattoos were considered either in highest regards or lowest of scum.

Dragons are in our dna. Ever since the dawn of man, we have feared the dragon, which is a combinations of the 3 most common enemies of our monkey ancestors, the bird of prey, the snake, and the large cat. Every civilization in the world had its own dragon, many wich looked quite similar and all of them sharing these main features. Millions of years of evolution has made us afraid of them, and as they no longer became a threat, then our mind combined them in story to form the dragon, and so we evolved etching this primal instinct to fear the main three predators and combined them into the dragon. It is the ultimate fear. Its not about originality. Very rarely do you ever see 2 dragon tattoos exactly alike. EVERY time i do a dragon tattoo, I change it a little. It becomes original.

I am getting a dragon tattoo as a memorial for my mom. She loves dragons and so do I. I am not doing it to fall in the crowd, or to be a 'sheep'. I am doing it to remember one of the most influential people in my life. And I do not care what anyone thinks. The only person I care to impress is my husband, and he loves the design my artist drew up for me and the rest of my tattoos. So no offense to you, but you can go play in heavy traffic for all I care.

well, I dont have a dragon tattoo, but I do have a butterfly and 2 heart tattoos...heres why: the butterfly tattoo I got to symbolize change when I moved out of my parents house for the first time. I have always been afraid of changes...I hated semister changes in high school and everything. so when I moved in with my bf at 19 I decided to get this tattoo to remind me that some changes are good and not to be afraid of change...butterflies are a beautiful result of a change. my first heart tattoo is one I drew myself with wings (not typical angel wings) and my husbands name in the middle. it symbolizes that I gave him a piece of myself that I can never get back...which I did...if we ever split up, I will forever be a changed person because of him..and my tattoo is forever hence the piece I can never get back. I want to remind myself what its like to give your heart to someone so I wont be too quick to do it again if hubby and I ever divorce (we were married within 8 months of being together and moved in with eachother after 1 month of dating...but we did know eacother for over a year before that) and my last heart is one from my favourite cd of my favourite artist who shares similar beliefs as me on religion and just life in general. for a long time I tried to believe in things I really didnt believe just to make others happy, but now I feel its ok to believe what I want to believe becuase I dont feel like I'm the only one anymore. I also have flowers on my past...3 in a row with the middle one being the largest...it simbolizes past, present and future. to remind me to always live for today becuase I cant change yesterday and I can predict tomorrow. hope this helps you out.
