What an original question!

In the best of times it is my friend. At the worst, it does me more harm through my imagination than anything else ever has. I have actually given myself a headache thinking about something too long and bouncing ideas around in my head........

In the Bhagavad Gita Krsna says:

Chapter 6,text 5-6
"uddhared atmanatmanam
natmanam avasadayet
atmaiva hy atmano bandhur
atmaiva ripur
atmanah"

A man must elevate himself by his own mind, not degrade himself. The mind is the friend of the conditioned soul, and his enemy as well.

"bandhur atmatmanas tasya
yenatmaivatmana jitah
anatmana tui satruve
vartetatmaiva satruvat"

For him who has conquered the mind, the mind is the best of friends;but for one who has failed to do so,his very mind will be the greatest enemy.

My mind is my best friend! The second answer is Y E S!!! The first thing to do is S T O P: believing that your mind is controlled by outside forces, such as God or the Devil, and it therefore controls you. This is utter nonsense!!! Try controlling your own mind for a change and see where it takes you. I guarantee you; you'll be a lot happier.

We have a mind, heart and soul. When they all speak the same language then we are in harmony - but when they all tug in different directions we have internal conflict. Meditation or true prayer helps us in deciding on the correct path and thus in aligning the three so that we experience peace, joy and true bliss.

In the above context, take an example. If you are in love with a woman who is already happily married to someone else. . Your heart wants her because of your love for her. But your soul finds voice in your conscience and tells you that it is not right to try to destroy someones happiness and true love is seing your loved one happy. Suppose you are in deep debt and you do not know the means to repay it. You know a very rich lady who has tonnes of money but you do not love, trust or respect her. Your mind dictates that you try to woo her for her huge wealth. But again your conscience or our ingrained moral values tell us that it is wrong to use someone for our gain and covet anyone else's wealth.

If the heart and mind are wayward and not under your control you will always be in conflict with your conscience ( maybe in the subconscious without realising it). As I have already said meditation / prayer help us in being able to differentiate right behaviour from wrong and thus bringing the mind and heart under our control - thus bringing an end to inner turmoil and also peace and harmony in the world around us.

by having faith. and love in our hearts we can overcome the mind that is so very human.it is animistic in nature. we have all the temptations all the desires .lust greed vanity .and all the other vises.but we can have the holy spirit within us guiding us if we will ask of it. and listen and do Gods will. and not do other things that are not right.if we have the spirit of God within us. even though our minds may be tempted we can over come.my grandfather told me once that he was mourning over his son dieing and asking God why. he loved him so. he said that in his life all he had ever done that wasn't right. was that when he borrowed a plow and a bolt broke. he didn't replace it with a new one but an old one he had.we can live righteous life's. if we so desire
and even though my mind is depressed from so much pain and my family being killed in a car wreck and home destroyed in a tornado..and my mind is not totally right.i am depressed. i still know that the spirit of God is with me and that comforts me. greatly.i have seen supernatural miracles and know his spirit so i am grateful.with faith you can make your mind a friend. have faith

Your mind is w/e you want it to be. Truthfully the mind is good at playing tricks on you, but once you learn how to controll it, you've conquered a human beings biggest fear. Try forcing yourself to produce positive thought after another, even though it might be hard to find something positive sometimes. Just do what the good side of you tells you to do bud

My mind is a naughty child always out to play mischief and needs constant goading to keep it under control. But it is a very pleasant friend and emanates good thoughts to keep me going.
