"Oh my god" is an idomatic expression. It helps to convey a certan meaning just as other more blaspemous statemens I won't bother to put in this answer out of respect for the sensibilites of those who it is a bigger deal than it is to me. To the point, these expressions, while containing an implication of belief, are nothing more to a nonbeliever than words that convey a meaning in the most efficent way possible. Besides can you really see anyone saying "oh random fluctions in the space time continum" when they hit their thumb with a hammer?

Commonly used expression in a country where 85% are theists. It doesn't mean anything to me, although I try to avoid using the expression since it's stupid and superstitious. I also try to avoid knocking on wood and throwing salt over my shoulder but some things are almost reflexive by the time you're in your 40s.

Ever consider that's it a common expression in our society? We grow up hearing it just as much as most anyone else...in society, in the media, etc. It has no meaning to me other then something crazy, exciting, or bad just happened, no bit of deity belief in my saying it, but I still say it because I grew up hearing it.
In a way it's like asking why you speak English...probably because it's what you grew up with.

You're really reaching, aren't you? LOL
It's just a saying. Nobody's trying to communicate with God when they say "Oh my God." It's not the only phrase people use anyway. How about "Oh my Gosh"? Are people trying to talk to "gosh"? Or How about "holy sh!t"? Does anyone believe sh!t is actually holy? I hope not.
Get over yourself. Nonbelievers aren't trying to harm you so just let it go.

I say it because, to me, it's just a common expression. I'm agnostic, so I guess technically, I would have to say "Oh my hypothetical God!". But really, I don't think it matters that I don't actually believe in God. The statement evolved (oh! oh! oh! BAM! lol) beyond its literal interpretation, long ago.

Why do Christians say "Thursday" if they aren't dedicating the day to Thor?
"Thursday" and "oh my God" are both part of the English language. People use both of them without intending to refer to the deities they mention.

When i say that or "bless you" its more out of politeness and an ingrained thing in my mind to say those things. Very Pavlovian...you know stimulus-response. I also say Jesus H. F**king Christ, is that something I need to worry about as well as a non-believer?

It is a figure of speech. Why do people say "crap" when they are dissapointed in some way? Did they encounter someone's waste?
"Oh my god" probably has a meaning of its own now, and the "god" part probably means nothing.

it's a metaphoric expression of common acceptance and understanding. My scientist or my questioner would sound rather queer don't you think? what do you think of expressions like Gadzooks? Also someone not there might have less ramifications to a professional person .

For the same reason I say "Oh f**k!".. even when I am not engaged in the act.
It's part of the language as an interjection. No meaning implied.
