You have to go to where the records are. I used to do social work and had to go to a lot of court houses to look up births, deaths, marriages, land ownership, etc. and there is never a charge if you do the research yourself. They just bring out really old books that you have to go through. Although I haven't done it in awhile and I suppose a lot is on computer now, but if it's old stuff it will probably never get transferred and you will have to do it the old fashioned way.
Actually, it's very interesting and you lose time because you stop to read everything, and wonder.

As Lodi described most county courthouses have a basement or annex where you can search the old records, but there's a fee for copies you make for your genealogy files. If it's cemeteries you're searching there's no fee. Most commonly these days headstones are photographed with digital cameras.

If you are referring to genealogy, go to places like:
www.rootsweb.com ; www.genealogy.com (they have a forum site called genforum where you can post questions and see who answers) ; www.cyndislist.com is free; or just type in free genealogy sites in a search engine like Yahoo, Google, MSN, etc. You'll be amazed at the number of sites that pop up. You might have to register at some of them to see certain records, however.
