Doesn't it seem odd that God didn't tell Joseph to number things right from the start? So they had to change it later on?

This occurred sometime after the 1830 edition, which was done in order to make memorizing it easier, although I think it detracts from the 'story' narrative. The book publication itself went thru several revisions and typeset technologies which explains why sometimes your read 'white and delightsome' or 'pure and delightsome', or a dead Mosiah prophesying.
Now there appears to be a concern over the original typesetters use of "descendants" from the original printer m'script' that read 'descenters'.
Must be another word like 'deseret' meaning 'honeybee', an insect that did not exist in the Americas prior to the 1500's.
God is just testing us, y'know.

The Book of Mormon was broken into verses and numbers to make it easier to read. The text wasn't changed. Many editors put out new editions of books down the road and make them easier to read. Why is that so odd?
Also, if you are translating characters from another language, I doubt there would be paragraph and verse notations as you read. You would just read it as it was, and someone would be writing what you said. You would probably go back later and figure out where paragraphs could be broken so the entire book isn't one huge paragraph. If Joseph Smith was making things up as he went, he would have broken up the words in paragraphs or chapters. Because the original translation was one long continuous text, that adds to the fact that he was telling the truth - he was translating from something and NOT writing his own made-up story.

Did God tell Moses to put chapter and verse numbers into the Torah? Doesn't it seem odd that God didn't tell Moses to number things right from the start?

No, it's not odd, because Joseph only had a very short time to get the translation done and there jsut wasn't enough time to get that sort of thing done right away. It wasn't until Joseph had a little time that he, and a few others, were able to figure out such things.

God didn't have anything to do with the book of Mormon. it is a fantasy of Joseph Smith to try and explain how the Indians got here and it was stolen mostly from Isaiah in the Old Testament. there is no proof that any of the events actually happened (and by the way the bible has lots of archaeological and extra-biblical proof) look at the list of witnesses and you'll see they are all Joseph Smiths close relatives. and since it is a fabrication of Joseph Smith, i would say that when he wrote it, he added the verse and chapter separations.

Read this , see if you are able to understand it.
26 For behold, it is not meet that I should command in all things; for he that is compelled in all things, the same is a slothful and not a wise servant; wherefore he receiveth no reward.
27 Verily I say, men should be anxiously engaged in a good cause, and do many things of their own free will, and bring to pass much righteousness;
28 For the power is in them, wherein they are agents unto themselves. And inasmuch as men do good they shall in nowise lose their reward.
29 But he that doeth not anything until he is commanded, and receiveth a commandment with doubtful heart, and keepeth it with slothfulness, the same is damned.

Isn't it weird that God's word was tampered with and altered by scholars and magistrates during the Nicene Creed so man could strike things from the record they didn't understand and compromise doctrine therein.
