2) When should I separate the mom from the babies?

Since rats are very social it is a good idea to interact with her for a few hours every day. I used to put an old blanket on my bed and let my rats run on the bed while I sat with them.

Mom should be seperated from her male babies when they are about 4 weeks. Rats are sexually mature at a few weeks old and the males will breed with the females very early.

Play with her every day, preferably a few times each day. Handle the babies daily as well so they'll be well socialized. You can separate her boy babies @ around 4 weeks of age, I think they may be able to mate by 5 or 6 weeks. You might want to leave her daughters with her so she has their company. Our mama rat stayed happilly with her daughters for the rest of her life.

I think the general rule of thumb for how often you should play/interact with your rattie is at least 4 hours daily if it's alone, or at least 1 hour daily if you have more than one together. Of course, with rats, the more time you spend with them, the better. And after a while, they'll be begging to come out to play with you as often as possible.

Rats are very social little creatures and love attention, the more time you spend with her the more she will come to like you. Carry her around on your shoulder when you are doing your housework or just relaxing.
They are also very affectionate with their handler with time.
As soon as your babies are eating and drinking on their own is a good sign for them to be separated. Its around 3 to 4 wks by memory.

1] as often as you can but if shes nursing wait til she 'asks' to come for a break otherwise you might interrupt a feeding cycle
2] females can stay with mum as long as you wish
seperate males off at 5 weeks[or 41/2 if they are big and chunky] as after 5 weeks theyll make all the little girls mummies, but make sure you keep all the boys together for company and are giving them loads of food high in protein and mixed with lactol or kitten milk, never dairy milk

When I had a hamster I gave it attention every or everyother day. And it really liked me. I could even put it on sholder. you should hold it every other day. And don't seperate it from the mom. It will do it itsself.

You should let her out and "play" with it EVERYDAY. In order to tame her, she needs TO BE tamed.

Mother and babies can be seperated at 21days [3 weeks]
