Yes they will get you into low-income housing, get you food stamps, and medical insurance. Just call your local job & family services...you'll have to go in to fill out application. Most of the time they can get you help within a couple days if not that day w/food !! good luck to you & your kids

Contact your local HUD (Housing and Urban Development) office, they are in charge of low-income housing, including Section 8 (you apply for funding, find your own housing within a limited price range, then they pay your rent) and HUD housing, where you simply pay a percentage of your income, usually 30% of whatever you are living on.

Unfortunately, depending on where you are, the wait-list can be from 6 months to 3 years. In my area it's closer to three years. But if you're in a situation where you are in an emergency need for housing (homeless, about to lose your home or fleeing an abusive marriage) they generally move you up on the wait-list.

Generally emergency housing is not the best, sometimes it is a "families shelter" and sometimes it's simply a furnished apartment meant for short-term occupation (under a year).

It doesn't matter if your kids are under the age of 12, they count any kids 17 or younger somewhat equally. They do have strict rules about bedrooms. In federally subsudized housing they do not allow a child over the age of 2 to be in a bedroom with the parents, no more than 2 children per bedroom, no children of opposite genders in one room, and no children more than 5(or is it 7?) years apart in age in a room. This means that they will NOT put a family with one parent(s), three girls (age 3, 4, 10) and one boy (age 7) in a 2 bedroom apartment, or even a 3 bedroom. That family would only be eligible for 4 bedrooms, and those are in very short supply, so the larger the family, or the odder the age/gender mix, the longer the waitlist.

Been there, done that, been put on the waitlist while we lived in a barn. *sigh*

It's worth it though. Once you (finally) get in gives you a measure of breathing room while you get back on your feet. And, as I said, if your situation is truely desperate they will find a place for you far more quickly.

And do apply for food stamps and aid. Not only will they get you basic living expenses, but they also get your into training to find a job. Or even better, get into a college or university that provides low-cost housing. While you are a student you can get get cheap housing, enough money in financial aid and loans to live on (if you live frugally) and when you graduate with your degree, you never have to worry about low-pay jobs again.

State and local governments always have help for housing. Being that you are a single parent should move you towards the top of the list. The list is usually the problem. Depending upon the size of the town or city you I've in, low income housing may be hard to get into. You can call your local public health department, city hall, or family services and they can tell you how to sign up. Good luck.

yes, there is help for housing, as well for daycare so she can WORK and support her family, as well as there is Child Support Agencies to help her get the financial support from the father of the children. The faster she gets the help the faster she'll get on her feet and soon she will not need any help from the government.

If she is handicapped or low income she might be able to apply for section 8 housing. Why doesn't she have income? Most people have at least SSI or child support even if they can't work.
