I have thought about this topic several times.. I have come up with a few theory's on this topic.. ..
1. Their entire belief system is locked up in the one book so they are unable to quote anything else to either make an argument for or defend their belief..
2. They are attempting what is known in military circles as carpet bombing.. No targeting just mass inundation in the hopes something hits a target any target..
3. They are unable to wrap their minds around the possibility that not everyone believe in the bible.. They think quoting the bible is quoting something universally believed..
4.. They were dropped on their heads as babies..
I am not sure if any of these theories is correct, it's possible several are correct or none are correct.. I will continue to research the topic as it's very interesting..

Christians continue to quote scriptures because it's the only thing they have that resembles evidence... in that the Bible is physical. Frequently, the error is made when Christians attempt to define "empirical" evidence by physical existence alone, and the present-day Bible is a physical book. (The Bible says and so the Bible is and so the Bible says, and soforth.) In addition, Christians also seem to have difficulty with the concept of our (atheists) approaching their faith with a complete lack of faith. It's incomprehensible to them, our disbelief, and I've yet to encounter a Christian who is able to adequately explain how one even acquires faith in faithlessness. The conversations I've had tend to run something like this:
"How does one acquire faith?"
"Well, you read the Bible, but you have to do it with an open mind."
"What does that mean, in this case, "an open mind."? How far does that extend?"
"You just have to have faith that Jesus will show you."
So far as I can tell, you have to have faith to get faith. It's a process with no entry point, but that's really fine by me. If taking whatever journey these people did means abandoning my sense of logic in favor of circular arguments, I think I'll pass.

Well then why do the Atheists continue to de-grade and ask questions about the Christians ? It is not just a one way street. Seems to me from all I have read here on this site, that the Atheists try hard to prove the Christian wrong. What we all need to do, is believe in our own likings and teachings. Respect what others believe in and leave others alone. When Christians are attacked, they do have a defense mode, that they truly believe in.

Yes, it is strange.
Using the Bible to prove an argument doesn't work, because that's circular logic. And the book is clearly flawed when it comes to theological and moral precepts, from my understanding of it.
Seriously, how can I believe in a god that stones people to death? There is no moral leeway on that one.

In my experience I have found that most people who immediately begin to quote scripture are those who are extremely limited in their world experiences, meaning they haven't studied other religions and in some cases haven't actually read the entire bible and so must point out little pieces they heard all their lives to back up the only thing they know. I too used to try to gain insight into other's viewpoints but unfortunately I always get answers like "It sounds like you are lost and looking for God....visit your local church." I have always said that someone quoting the bible, to me is like, saying "Well my mom told me so." I dont mean to demean the bible and to insult those who love the bible, only point out that its really not a strong point of reference for debating. I feel your frustration with this forum in trying to actually learn rather than get into pointless arguments.

For some reason, they don't think we've read the bible and thus, we don't know how filled with BS it really is. They think if they constantly quote it to us, we'll see it all out of context and get confused, like they are.
Too bad they just don't have a clue.
Tamara, you'd be hard pressed to find an atheist... a "true" atheist, to use a common Christian adjective, who is not very well-versed on the bible. Most atheists have read many religious texts in their search for what they believe to be true. See, we don't just accept things that we are told.... we read, research, and learn about things before we accept them as true.

You stated that this is RELIGION & SPIRITUALITY. You are correct. Athiests usually don't have a religion per se, and don't believe in having spirits, so why are they even here?
This is a place to discuss religion, and almost every religion has books and writings to discuss. If you kick out all the scriptures and tell all the religious people to stop quoting what they believe in order to support their answers or add insights, then RELIGION and SPIRITUALITY would not exist.
If you are athiest and don't want to hear scriptures quoted, perhaps you should not be walking into a place that is called RELIGION & SPIRITUALITY. Find another forum that quotes whatever you are more comfortable hearing.

Most Christians quote scripture to Atheists out of their own personal insecurities, regarding their own lack of faith!
Most Atheists don't want to be quoted scripture or talk about true spirituality, in fear that they might develop personal faith!
Both share an item known as, fear of the unknown!

Most athesits haven't studied the bible. I believe most of them just have parents who either didn't have faith, or believed if their child wanted to believe then good for them, but they weren't going to force them into it.
That's how my parents are anyway. And by quoting scripture, it gives us(Christians) a way to let you know what our view of the subject is.
Now, if the question is like "how do yo ufeel about gay people" then they quoted scripture, then I know what you mean, but if you ask something about the religion, like what do Christians think, then people may confuse it with what are christians suppossed to think(according to the bible).
So then I can understand why they do it...it's all about how you ask the question.
