The doughnut has a hole in the middle to make sure that it cooks all the way through. The forerunner of the modern doughnut was the Dutch "olycoeke" (fried cake), which didn't have a hole in the center. As a result, they sometimes didn't cook completely, and the center was doughy.

At some point, someone got the bright idea to form the dough into its present shape, which meant that it had a better chance of cooking completely. That person's name has been lost to history, but their innovation lives on!

the middle gets soggy and that isnt too great. so some smart guy decide to punch a holw in the middle then the doughnut became nice on the outside all around

because when it was invented the captain of the ship need open hands when navigating the ship so he had to stick his sweet bread into the middle of his navigating wheel, thus making a doughnut.

They are deep fried in oil.

The center would not cook before the outside was burnt if there was not a hole in the center. They would not cook evenly.

There are many theories, but the leading one is that it allows the donut to cook fully with no uncooked or soft sport

it allows it to be cooked more evenly plus its easier to hold on to and its been made like this for so long that why change it?

im assuming because when you "dunk" it in your coffee it gives you a grip to hold on to. im also assuming because its easier to get them out of the fryer.
