Hey
My friend gave me a Toshiba laptop with Vista on it
I wanted to downgrade to XP
But when I press F2 to enter Bios it asks me for a password
My friend doesn't know the password
We have tried everything...
I know on a PC you can removed the coin battery and the password will go away
I have the program ERD Commander to change passwords, but without me being able to get into the BIOS to change the boot sequence I don't think ERD will load
Any suggestions to get past a BIOS password will be greatly appreciated
Thanks in advance

Sometimes it is possible to go into add/remove programs and downgrade to the previous OS from there without having to mess around with the BIOS.. However, if Vista was done as a clean install you probably won't have that option. The only other option I can think of is to back up the files you need such as the my documents folder, etc and do a clean install of XP...it will prompt you to format the C: drive during setup. You will unfortunately still have the locked BIOS issue, ,however. The only way to solve that is to open the computer up and take the battery out for a few minutes and put it back in...I don't think they make laptops with password reset jumpers anymore (if they ever did). Hope this helps

If you open the laptop, BE VERY CAREFUL. laptops are very fagile inside.

to clear the password, look on the motherboard for the BIOS, and then somewhere near it should be a jumper, just take the jumper off and then put it back on. it should clear the password

If you can find a manual possibly one online, that has instructions on how to reset the bios you might be able to reset the password that way.

If that sounds too complicated, then just go to your local computer shop and I bet they could do it for under 50 bucks.
