What are some causes for getting the "setup could not copy file" error while restoring Windows XP Pro??? I've tried 3 different times to restore Windows on my PC which has been wiped clean. Each time I'm getting this error, usually a different file it's having trouble, sometimes it makes it farther than on other attempts? Any solutions?????

I've tried 2 different hard drives and have gotten the same thing. I hooked up a new cd-rom but it wouldn't work, giving me a NTSBL (i think that's what it said) is missing. I'm frustrated.

I'm 90% sure your hard drive has bad sectors on it.

I've described a hard drive to someone before as a Diamond. There is no such thing as a perfect diamond they all have minor flaws of some kind on them.

When you first install your operating system from scratch you have two choices. Format (Quick) or Format
If you do Quick you totally skip the error checking that happens where it goes through your whole hard drive looking for flaws, looking for Bad Sectors that it cannot write to, or it can write to but cannot read from. So when your installation tries to copy a file to the bad sectors it fails

Since your reinstalling your Operating system it tells me this is a very likely possiblility because bad sectors developing could easilly cause the original problem that caused you to be doing the reinstall to begin with.

If you want it to succeed do not choose the "Quick Format" let it do a long format and try to find all the bad sectors before installing.
If it continues to fail you will likely need a new hard drive.

$50 will get you a 100g drive at walmart or www.buy.com or wherever you want to buy it from.

Clean your disk off really well.
Borrow another cdrom drive from a different computer, hook that one up and try again.

Actual CD Disk is scratched
CDRom drive is bad
