Religion is a component of these and many other conflicts, but it's not the only reason for them. Ireland, Israel/Palestine... it's about power and religion. If there was no religion, it would be ethnicity, or some other factor. Religion does make it easier to target another group. For some strange reason, people take it more seriously than the other factors though.

As a Christian I am afraid I will have to agree that you are right. Religions have been at the root of many conflicts or "turf wars" as you called them.
Man has created religions. They did not come from God but are the result of one or a group of individuals who have interpreted what is considered to be the word of God and made the decisions for all as to how you need to believe.
Religion without first having a personal relationship with our Creator is folly. They are but following the ideas of man.

Yes you can say that literally but if you examine it further it is not true. As people put thier hopes on thier God ,they are willing to die for it in some sect if you provoke them or they are been provoked.
Please remember there is no Holy War....as they are a bunch of murderers creating genocides, rape, rob, and torture.
A soldiers is say to defend a country. A soldier is a trainned to murder, destroy and manupulate captive to submit. they are the worst profession.
Tell somone how can a war be holy!!! When there is so much of bloodshed, destruction and death. Why give Victoria Cross or Purple Heart when their Heart is not right.
Live in peace and learn to stop the squabble or you will be used by power hungry crazy leader.

im going with turf wars. people find excuses in religion to justify it.
the irish were oppressed by england forever, england was mostly protestant.
therefore, the catholic irish fight the protestants. Not so much religion as anger.
isreal/palestine- they're mad they lost their land to isreal(even though they were paid, is that correct?)
in the middle east, Jews and America are the scape goat ("man, being a poor man in this oppressive society sucks, but once the jews are gone and the great satan (america) is destroyed i'm sure all my problems will go away")

There is great spiritual warfare going on in the world, since Lucifer fell out of heaven with 1/3 of the angels. Satan's plot is to seduce this world thru false religions. There is much boldness of religion today that is in opposition to Jesus Christ. God will only tolerate it for so long and then He will go into action (Read the judgments in Revelation to come). If you read the Bible, you'll understand why Israel is in the limelight today and how this is leading to end times. This is why christianity is not a religion, but Faith in Jesus Christ, who is The Way, The Truth and The Life. Satan hates God's chosen people, the Jews, Israel and thru men, wants to obliterate them. Satan uses men to accomplish his evils. Read The Bible. God bless

I agree with devora and Mary. Religion is an easy target for selfish, arrogant and jealous people to push their own agenda, covering their butts by saying it is 'God's plan.'
I want to caution people: there have definitely been many peaceful and loving religious groups in history as well, even in modern times.
Unfortunately, in this era, the media jumps at the opportunity to cover violent things done in the name of religion, instead of emphasizing more of the good that religion brings to peoples and nations.
That's why innocent people like you end up asking such a question which may cause people to stay away from religion in general.

I don't think religion is the root cause. I think the root cause is business-related (trade routes, etc). Divide & conquer policies are implemented by western spies, which serve to fan the flames of distain and trigger cultural clashes (most likely based on religion).
This is how I believe it works: Spy goes in, starts a little "cult" of religious extremists & incites hate toward other "cult" of religious extremists. Both kill eachother, then the west comes in and does as it pleases without much resistance.

not many, all of todays problems eminate from religion....and that too only from one religion... that is islam.in the whole world where ever you see death, destruction, misries, bomb blasts killings, beheadings and so on that you find comes from muslim societies.
who did 9/11....who did 7/7...iraqis are killing iraqis...afghans are killing afghans...pakistanis are killing not only pakistanis but also indians, afghans, iraqis, americans. britons and above all people from all other religions. muslims have declared war against all other world religions...their diktat being that all either convert to islam or be ready to suicide bombing.
what kind of a religion is it...where violance is an inseperable part...???

Undoubtedly, religion is responsible for much bloodshed, this is why very soon, God is going to have the kings of the earth destroy Babylon the Great, the world empire of false religion.

Is this question for real? 9/11 should be all the answer I need to give here. If you need two examples, how about stem cell research?
This question would have knocked me off my feet if I weren't already sitting.
