i mean i have this lotion and i use it to basically prevent a 'tan' from forming on my skin, but it says 'protects from uv rays and helps prevent sunburn', I wouldn't have a sunburn as i am brown skinned but i want to know if the thing can prevent sun tan as well , because be it tan or burn , it is caused due to UV right?

well as far as my login and knolege on this subject goes. they almost are the same thing. your right, they are both caused buy the cancer causeing UV rays of the sun. when you get a sunburn ur skin just absorbed too much of these rays. the darker ur skin is, the more rays u can withstand before sunburns apper. and suntan lotion prevents the UV rays from being absorbed by ur skin. the SPF rating im not faniliar with but i know higher is better and i think it goes something like for every 15 SPF then you can stay out in the sun for twice as long as you could with nothing on. hope that helps, but im not thinking strait right now so may be confusing

Yes, a very strong sunscreen will protect your skin from tanning as well as burning. Tans are not the same as burns because tans do not hurt.

you are right, UVA and UVB radiation from the sun cause burning and tanning, and a burn and a tan are just varying degrees of the same damage.
Congratulations on your efforts to actually protect your skin, because dark complected people get skin cancer too.

well sunburn is the actual redness of the skin, like if you get burned on a stove. suntan is just the darkening of the skin , but suntan dosent hurt

Well one you get golden, and brown, and the other you get bright red, and peel. If you want to block a tan make sure you get 40+, and that it is not a cheap brand. and reapply frequently
