If you go to the coastline, there's Van Damme National Park. My wife & I stayed there in 1999. It's pretty nice.
I'd also say to head toward Lake Tahoe, but I heard there are some forest fires there. That might ruin the fun.

White Cloud campground in Tahoe National Forest, 10 miles east of Grass Valley, about 1 hr 15 min from Sacramento.
4000 ft elevation, pine/cedar forest.

Depend on your definition of "near"....Lake Almanor, in Plumas County, is the best camping experience in California. Donner Lake, which is closer, is cool too. Union Valley resevoir, Beal's Point campground at Folsom Lake rocks too.

big sur....i'm not sure how far away it is, but my friend has been to hawii, and she still thinks that camping at big sur is the best place to be!
