I think that having a personal relationship with him is more important than honoring the 10 commandments? I mean do you just honor them or do you actually have a personal but not private relationship with him?

You are on the right track, but you will find lots of naysayers when it comes to obedience to God! Read the truth from your Bible:

Psalm 111:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.

(There are at least 613 commandments, by the way, not just 10, the 10 are like the table of contents to a book. The Torah expounds on them further)

Ecclesiastes 12:13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.

Yashua understood this very well, He also knew that many would say that He came to do away with His Father's Law. In the words of the Messiah:

Mark 7:7 Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

Matthew 5:17 Let there be no thought that I have come to put an end to the law or the prophets. I have not come for destruction, but to make complete.
18 Truly I say to you, Till heaven and earth come to an end, not the smallest letter or part of a letter will in any way be taken from the law, till all things are done.
19 Whoever then goes against the smallest of these laws, teaching men to do the same, will be named least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who keeps the laws, teaching others to keep them, will be named great in the kingdom of heaven.

Did Paul and the Apostles teach any differently?

Read the whole book of Romans carefully!

1John 3:4 Everyone who is a sinner goes against the law, for sin is going against the law.

Romans 3:20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

Keeping in mind Paul and John's definition of sin:

Romans 6:15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid!

1John 2:4 The man who says, I have knowledge of him, and does not keep his laws, is false, and there is nothing true in him:

1Corinthians 7:19 Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but the keeping of the commandments of God.

Romans 7:12 But the law is holy, and its orders are holy, upright, and good.
13 Was then that which is good, death to me? In no way. But the purpose was that sin might be seen to be sin by working death to me through that which is good; so that through the orders of the law sin might seem much more evil.

There is so much more proof, right from your Bible. Here are a few sites to guide and strenghten your study;

This is a very good question! Many people think that following the ten commandments is the way to honor God. Actually, the ten commandments are kind-of like a mirror, which shows us what we are really like. We can try to keep them, but we have all failed at it. For example, the first command is that we not have any other gods before Him - in other words, to put Him first in our lives. We have all failed, right there. If we go through all 10, it's easy to see that we haven't kept them - who hasn't either told a lie, stolen something, lusted, or dishonored their parents, for example?

If we were to stand before God and be judged by this standard, we would be found guilty and deserve to be separated from God for eternity.

However, God has provided a remedy. Because God loved us, He sent Jesus, His Son, to earth to live a sinless, holy life, and then die on a cross, taking your and my penalty for disobeying His law, and then He arose again. (Jesus agreed to this - for many years I was confused on this, but God didn't "make" Jesus do this - they were in 100% agreement.)

If we repent (which means turning away from sin which is wrong-doing, disobedience to God), and turn to God, putting our trust in Jesus Christ, we can receive His forgiveness and get a new start. God then counts Jesus' perfection as ours, and therefore we are able to go to heaven and not hell.

God also gives us the power to live in a way that honors Him. He does that by having His Holy Spirit come and dwell within us the moment we repent and trust in Him. Our desires then begin to change and we desire to do the things that please Him. We also then have a relationship with God, where He is our Friend, and as we talk to Him and listen to Him, He shows us His plan/destiny for our lives, and we honor Him as we carry that out.

To do this, simply pray - talk to God - tell Him how you've broken His law and are turning away from that, and ask Him to forgive you and come in and be your Lord (king, boss) from now on. Jesus doesn't promise a rosy life from then on, but He will be with you, and you'll be eternally glad you did this. Check out the Bible verses listed below, for further understanding.

Keeping God's Commandments is an excellent start. But Jesus said of his people (servants):
"But which of you, having a servant plowing or feeding cattle, will say unto him by and by, when he is come from the field, Go and sit down to meat? And will not rather say unto him, Make ready wherewith I may sup, and gird thyself, and serve me, till I have eaten and drunken; and afterward thou shalt eat and drink? Doth he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I trow not. So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do" (Luke 17:7-10).

And Paul teaches, "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them" (Eph 2:10).

So, the commandments are only a start on the Godly life. Good works are what shows that we love God, his people, his creation and his law of love (the Commandments).

Although the commandments are excellent guidelines for people on how to live their lives in peace and harmony, it is not the only thing that God seeks. In fact, it is probably not even the most important thing God seeks from His children. He wants a very personal relationship with each of us. He wants us to trust Him completely and allow Him to bless us as He wants to do.

Try following the 11th commandment: Love one another.

That is certainly a wonderful starting point. But there is much more if you choose to do it. These are some examples that just popped into my head.

study His word and share it with others
find opportunity to praise Him--small things count too
reach out to your fellow man with whatever you have to offer
talk (pray) to Him about your joys, fears, desires, anger etc

find your own unique way of appreciating Him.........
