For those who don't believe in God
what if one day your child tells you, that he/she wants to learn about God and read the bible and go to church, what do you tell them?
This is just a question out of curiosity... *smiles*

Tell them it will be the most important question of their life.

I have 3 children ages 19,17 and 10.. When my older two wanted to know about religion I facilitated it.. I visited church services with them until they were old enough to drive themselves and let them make up their own minds..

I will do the same with the youngest when and if she begins to ask questions..

My oldest daughter (19) is an agnostic, she believes some power (whether it be god or something else) exists she however believes it is just an observer not a director..

My son (age 17) is an Atheist.. He does not believe any higher power (deity, god, etc) exists..

My youngest is 10 and hasn't declared a belief as yet but is beginning to ask the preliminary questions the older two asked before they began researching religions and beliefs.. It's probably only a matter of time before they youngest shows an interest in researching religions and beliefs..

Each of my 3 children are individuals and each has the right to research and make up their own mind even if ther opinion differs from mind.. It won't be the first time we have had differing opinions and it won't be the last..

My parents are atheists, and when I was little I wanted to be Catholic. My parents told me as much about it as they were able, bought me a Bible when I asked for one, and encouraged me to attend church with my aunt or my friends. I think their flexibility has really helped me develop and I really appreciate them for not forcing me into any particular belief. Though I have now chosen to be an atheist, it was my CHOICE, and there was no brainwashing whatsoever on their part.

I am - for lack of a better label - pagan. I take my kids to church, different ones at different times, and if they want to learn more, we study together. I believe everyone has a right to choose their own path, and will always encourage my children to do so.

Great Question

Please use these scriptures as a guide

Eccles. 12:1 (NIV) Remember your Creator
in the days of your youth,
before the days of trouble come
and the years approach when you will say,
"I find no pleasure in them"--

Proverbs 22:6 (NIV)
Train a child in the way he should go,
and when he is old he will not turn from it.

Well, tell 'em of course. That there’s simply NO EVIDENCE, for 'God', Ra, Odin, Amotken, Zeus, Baal, Jupiter, Shiva, Apo, Skak, Allah, Zoroaster, Cai Shen, Toci, Quetzalcoatl, Asase Ya, Jehovah, Zeme, the Kind and Mighty FSM & 000s more…
( Belief in any one is no more logical than belief in *ALL*. )

First: Which god? There are thousands, you know.

Second: I will tell them enough about gods - as an inoculation against religious belief.

After all, reading the entire bible is how many people become atheists.

Let them go.

Talk to them about the experience.

Make sure that they read all the bible. Not just the nice bits that the pastor reads.

Talk to them about it.

I'm a believer, but I would say "Sure, but don't let other people's beliefs pollute your relationship with him. God is always forgiving."

Both of my children have done this. I've allowed them to explore it. It's another one of those things that if you forbid it, they will want to do it.
